Calvin Women's Basketball Picks Up Road Win Over Kalamazoo

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Today the Calvin women's basketball team traveled to Kalamazoo to take on the Hornets in a MIAA match up. With the regular season winding down and postseason approaching the Knights looked to build momentum starting with their 77-51 victory today.

Calvin got out to a hot start as Hannah Sall (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) quickly established herself down low and junior Anna Fernandez (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth Christian Academy) proved to be a threat from beyond the three-point line. Several other Knights including sophomore Katelyn LaRue (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and freshman Jamie Custer (Galena, Ohio/Worthington Christian) contributed as Calvin went on to outscore the Hornets 25-4 in the first quarter.

Looking to make a comeback, the Hornets came alive and slightly outscored the Knights in both the second and third quarters.

However, in the fourth quarter, Calvin put an exclamation point on the day as they once again showed off their high-powered offense. Outscoring Kalamazoo 21-11, the Knights had the opportunity to give every player on their roster minutes as Calvin went on to pick up the 77-51 win.

The Knights dominated the paint with 42 points being recorded down low while also out rebounding Kalamazoo 45-37. Calvin finished the game with an impressive 43.8 shooting percentage with significant contributions made by Calvin's bench as they were responsible for 24 of the team's points.

Defensively, Calvin recorded six blocks, forced 16 turnovers, and held the Hornets to just a 26.3 shooting percentage.

Sall finished as the Knights leading scorer with 18 points and 9 rebounds while Ferandez was close behind with 15 points. LaRue chipped in 12 points and Custer finished the game with 10 points. Sall and Sensenig each recorded two blocks.

COACHES COMMENTS: "Great response from our group," said head coach Mark Cristner. "The start was crucial; I want to credit Val and Soph for having our team ready to go. We want to be peaking leading into this last week of the regular season."

UP NEXT: The Knights will be back in action on Saturday, February 22nd when they travel to Olivet for the final game of the regular season. Tip off is set for 1PM.
