Calvin Women's Basketball Closes Out Regular Season With Commanding Win Over Olivet

OLIVET, Mich. - Today the Calvin women's basketball team closed out the 2025 regular season in dominant fashion as they picked up the 78-51 victory over the Comets of Olivet.

The Knights showed off their high-powered offense right from the jump as they outscored the Comets 26-9 in the first quarter. Sophomore Hannah Sall (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and senior Valerie Dirkse (Vienna, Va./Marshall) wasted no time establishing their presence down low while Chloe Wiegers (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) displayed her ability to drive to the basket.

Freshman Gabby Halliwill (Charlotte, Mich./Lansing Catholic) added some points from beyond the arc while sophomore Anna Fernadez (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth Christian Academy) settled in by converting several mid-range jumpers.

In the second quarter, despite the Comets offense coming alive the Knights continued to carry the momentum as sophomore Katelyn LaRue (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and senior Sophie Sensenig (Grayslake, Ill./Westlake) came alive and got in on the scoring action. By the end of the quarter Calvin headed into halftime with a comfortable lead of 47-29.

While the second half scoring was much quieter for both teams the Knights never lost their momentum or lead as they went on to pick up the 78-51 win.

The Knights finished the game with an impressive 39.3 field goal percentage while holding Olivet to a 29.3 field goal percentage. As a team, Calvin knocked down eight three-pointers while out rebounding the Comets 56-41. The Knights also forced Olivet to make 14 turnovers and dominated the Comets in the paint as they outscored them 46-28.

Sall finished the game as the Knights leading scorer with 21 points and 9 rebounds. Fernandez and LaRue each chipped in 10 points while Dirkse led the team in rebounds with 13. Defensively, Sall and Dirkse each recorded two blocks while LaRue recorded two steals.

COACHES COMMENT: "Very nice end to our regular season today at Olivet," said head coach Mark Christner. "The group was ready from the jump. The ability to establish the interior was a big help. We are excited about what lies ahead next week for this group."

UP NEXT: The Knights will be back in action on Tuesday, February 25th when they play Adrian in the opening round of the MIAA Tournament at Van Noord Arena. Tip-off is set for 7:30PM.
