GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Calvin opened its 2024 campaign with an emphatic 18-2 victory over the visiting Edgewood Eagles on a snowy Saturday afternoon at Zuidema Field.
Calvin (1-0) scored eight goals in the first quarter and never looked back. Seven different Knights scored for Calvin in the opening 15 minutes.
Sophomore
Jordan Warners (Orange, Ca./Crean Lutheran HS) tallied three consecutive goals in the second quarter in helping stake the Knights to a 15-0 halftime lead. Calvin's final first half goal was scored by faceoff specialist
Nate Hanson (Naperville, Il./North HS) who after winning a faceoff, collected a loose ball moments later in the attack half, bulldozed his way forward and crammed home a shot from 25 yards out. The goal was the first of his collegiate career.
Calvin led 17-1 after three quarters of play and eventually settled for the final margin of victory with Edgewood (0-1) scoring in the final 27 seconds of play.
Junior
Braden Carpenter (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville HS) notched his sixth collegiate hat trick with four goals and two assists. After scoring five goals in Calvin's 2024 season finale, Warners picked up where he left off, scoring four goals along with two assists. Senior
Thomas Smith (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich. Grosse Pointe South) recorded his 14
th collegiate hat trick with three goals on five shots.
Senior
Cole McKenney (Mission Viejo, Calif. Trabuco Hills) recorded two goals, one assist, three ground balls and four caused turnovers. Senior
Christian Coler (Ionia, N.Y. Honeyoye Falls-Lima) was credited with a goal and an assist. Senior
Brandon Eenigenburg (Norton Shores, Mich. Western Michigan Christian) had a goal and an assist to go with a pair of ground balls. Senior
Joshua Moyer (Allentown, Pa. Allentown Central Catholic) had a goal, three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Freshman
BJ Apol (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) scored his first collegiate goal along with Hanson. Senior
Jacob Bledsoe (Mission Viejo, Calif. J. Serra Catholic) had two assists with freshman
Colin TeBrake (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Northview HS) collecting one assist.
Five goalies – graduate student
Corgan Schaumburg (Rockton, Ill. Hononegah), senior
Carter Sherman (Ada, Mich./Lowell HS), junior
Soren Thiemann (Plano, Texas Plano Senior), senior
Tristan Windham (Parker, Colo. Lutheran) and freshman
Jack Bermel (Wheaton, Il. Wheaton North) combined for the victory in goal.
Calvin held a 54-16 shots at goal advantage.
COACHES COMMENT: "It was great to see us execute at a high level so early in the season," said Calvin head men's lacrosse coach
Dave Hoger. "Always nice to get the first win and be able to reward the guys that don't see the field as often th time. We are excited to get better next week heading into our first road game against a great opponent."
