Calvin Women's Basketball Falls to Wis.-La Crosse To Wrap Up Opening Weekend

RIVER FALLS, Mich. - Today the Calvin women's basketball team continued their opening weekend of play as they took on the Eagles of Wisconsin-La Crosse. After battling through a game with ten ties and nine lead changes the Knights eventually fell 55-60.

After a slow first quarter yesterday, the Knights looked to get things rolling quickly as junior Chloe Wiegers (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion) and sophomore Jamie Custer (Galena, Ohio/Worthington Christian) both recorded early buckets. Hannah Sall (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and RyAnn Rohrer (Ludington, Mich./Ludington) made their presence known down low while Gabby Halliwill (Charlotte, Mich./Lansing Catholic) and Emma Witte (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) each chipped in points. However, Wis.-La Crosse was also able to create offense in the first quarter and held a slim 18-14 lead after the first ten minutes.

In the second quarter, Calvin looked to flip the script as they outscored the Eagles 12-10 powered by eight points coming from the Knights bench. Defensively, Calvin forced five turnovers during the quarter and held Wis.-La Crosse to just a 26.6 shooting percentage, their lowest of the game.

Heading into the second half trailing by two, Wiegers took things into her own hand as she exploded with a ten-point third quarter. Junior Katelyn LaRue (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) chipped in a bucket while Rohrer and Halliwill added to their totals as Calvin recorded a 46.6 shooting percentage in the quarter, their best of the game. After three quarters of play, Calvin held a slim 43-42 lead.

In the fourth quarter, it was the Eagles who had a burst of energy as they outscored the Knights 17-11 and went on to claim the 60-55 victory over Calvin. Wiegers finished as the Knights leading scorer with twelve points while Rohrer finished the game with ten points and eight rebounds. Hannah Sall chipped in nine points, eight rebounds, and two blocks.

COACHES COMMENTS: "Tough result again today," said head coach Mark Christner. "I thought our fight was good. We have to be able to make some perimeter shots to alleviate the congestion inside.  We knew a good team from this event would be 0-2. Frustrating that it's us but we'll get better ASAP."

UP NEXT: The Knights will be back in action on Friday, November 14th when they host Ohio Wesleyan University on day one of the Calvin/Hope Classic. Tip-off is set for 7:30 PM.
