GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Today the Calvin women's basketball team played in its first home game of the season as it welcomed Ohio Wesleyan for day one of the Calvin/Hope Classic. After a tight first half the Knights came alive on offense in the second half to pick up their first win of the season in dominant fashion.
Â
In the first quarter the Knights got out to a hot start as junior duo
RyAnn Rohrer (Ludington, Mich./Ludington) and
Hannah Sall (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) got some quick buckets down low before senior
Anna Fernandez (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth Christian Academy) sank a three to stretch the Calvin lead.Â
Â
Heading into the second quarter, the Knights held a narrow six-point lead over the Battling Bishops. However, during the next ten minutes the team would match each other basket for basket as Ohio Wesleyan successfully cut down the Calvin lead to just three at the half.
Â
Looking to regain control the Knights came out in fire as offense came fast and often in the third quarter.
Chloe Wiegers (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion),
Katelyn LaRue (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian),
Jamie Custer (Galena, Ohio/Worthington Christian), and
Lydia Sall (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) all make contributions as the Knights posted a 61.11 shooting percentage in the quarter, their best of the evening. Defensively, Calvin held the Battling Bishops to just a 7.14 shooting percentage and headed into the fourth quarter with a commanding 51-31 lead.
Â

COACHES COMMENTS: "I thought our defensive intensity set the tone throughout the game tonight," said head coach
Mark Christner. "OWU is a fundamentally sound team with quality players. I thought we dictated the terms of the game. It was also good to see some shots fall. Important to recover and prep for another opportunity tomorrow vs a well coached Colorado College team."
Â
UP NEXT: The Knights will be back in action tomorrow Saturday, November 15th when they play Colorado College on day two of the Calvin/Hope Classic. Tip-off is set for 4PM in Van Noord Arena.
