Calvin Men's Soccer Defeats Hope 2-0 to Claim MIAA Tournament Title

HOLLAND, Mich. – Calvin captured its fourth straight MIAA Tournament crown on Saturday, defeating rival Hope 2-0 at Van Andel Stadium.

Freshman Toby Siemone (Riverside, Australia St. Patrick's College) scored both goals for the Knights including the clincher with just over a minute left to play.

Calvin improves to 16-3-1 overall with the win and will await its NCAA III Tournament destination when the field is announced next Monday morning.

Calvin held a big portion of possession in the first half and finally cashed in on a goal in the 26th minute as Simeone raced in from the right wing, collected a cross from sophomore Bennett Quijano (Canton, Mich./Salem HS) and slammed a shot past Hope goalkeeper Daniel Morgan.

Morgan had a pair of sterling saves early on, denying a headed ball by freshman Pol Sabe (Barcelona, Spain Col-legi Montserrat) in the 12th minute that appeared ticketed for the top shelf. He then stopped Quijano with a save low and smother another chance by senior Jonah Meyer-Crothers (Sylvania, Oh./Sylvania Northview HS) moments later.

The goal in the 26th minute by Simeone came against the run of play with the Knights beating Hope's high-line defense for the open shot and goal.

Hope had a handful of quality first half scoring chances but Calvin senior goalkeeper Zac Moore (Pilesgrove, N.J. Woodstown) stood tall to give the Flying Dutchmen from finding the back of the net.

Calvin had several chances to take a two-goal advantage but Morgan was able to make key second half saves to keep Hope within striking distance.

Hope pressed numbers forward inside the final 17 minutes. Ryker Corstange threatened for Hope but Moore came up with a key save in 74th minute. Hope had a corner kick with two minutes left that was cleared out the box by the Calvin defense.

The Calvin clearance ultimately led to a fast-break up the left wing with Simeone crashing in on goal. Morgan came charging off his line. Siemone was able to deke the ball past the goalkeeper and from a tight angle he slipped a low hard shot into the goal with 1:02 left on the clock to seal the win.

Calvin finished with a 17-15 shots at goal advantage. Moore had three saves for Calvin while Morgan had seven saves for Hope.

The MIAA Tournament title is Calvin's 11th overall – all of which have come under current head coach Ryan Souders. The victory was also the 250th of Souders' coaching career at Calvin. He is now 250-39-16 at Calvin.

COACHES COMMENT: "Extremely proud of this group for its effort and commitment today," said Souders. "Hope has an outstanding team. To get a win against them means a lot to us. Winning a league tournament is not an easy task but our guys galvanized over the last three games. Our win at Albion (Wednesday in the semis) gave us a bit of momentum and we carried that into today."

NEXT UP: Calvin will await its NCAA III Tournament destination when the tournament show begins at 11:30 a.m. (ET) next Monday.
