Calvin Men's Soccer Downs Grove City 1-0 in Double OT to Advance in NCAA III Tournament

GENEVA, NY – Calvin secured a dramatic 1-0 double-overtime victory over Grove City College Saturday afternoon on the campus of Hobart College. The Knights (17-3-1) advance to the second round on Saturday where they will face Messiah (12-7-2) at 1 p.m.

Junior Zac Brooks (One Tree, Colo./Valor Christian ) deposited a shot into a wide-open Grove City goal after receiving a smart cross from senior Hans Pruis (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS). The winning play began with a through-ball pass from senior Matt Torrell (Rochester, N.Y./The Charles Finney School) that sprung Pruis through the right wing. Pruis slipped a short pass to a wide-open Brooks for the goal that ended the contest 1:12 into the second overtime. Pruis and Torrell were both credited with assists on the play.

Despite the final score line, Saturday's contest featured wide-open play that led to numerous scoring chances for both teams.

Grove City peppered Calvin with four shots in the opening minutes but the Knights had the best chance as a shot by freshman Toby Simeone (Riverside, Australia St. Patrick's College) from the left side of the six-yard box skipped off the goalpost. Calvin cranked off six shots in the final 20 minutes of the half, coming close on a pair of chances but could not find the net.

Calvin squeezed off four shots in the opening 10 minutes of the second half but Grove City goalkeeper Keller Krieger was up to the task. Simeone had a breakaway on net in the 57th minute but Krieger smothered the chance with a sliding save.

Grove City pressured in the closing minutes of regulation, recording four shots and a corner kick but Calvin goalkeeper Zac Moore (Pilesgrove, N.J. Woodstown)came up big to keep the Wolverines from scoring.

Grove City had three corner kicks in the opening 10-minute overtime but Calvin cleared the ball out of danger on all three opportunities.

Calvin gained possession early in the second 10-minute overtime and found gold with the race through the right wing by Pruis that led to the winning goal by Brooks.

Calvin finished with a 19-18 shots at goal advantage. Moore had five saves for Calvin. Krieger had six saves for Grove City.

COACHES COMMENT: "Definitely a survive and advance game for us," said Calvin head men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "Grove City played really well and no one deserved to go home after that. Not always pretty. Not necessarily our best. But to our guys' credit, they found a way. What a great run from Hans there at the end to find ZB for the finish. And we aren't there without the fantastic work from Zach Moore and the back four on defense to keep the shutout. We'll have to rest up; and quickly, to prepare for another battle tomorrow."
