- The Lead-Up – Calvin is in season two under head coach Trent Figg. The Knights are off to a 6-2 start after wins over Oberlin (88-6), Concordia of Wisconsin (34-7), Heidelberg (40-37 OT), Kalamazoo (24-16), Trine (34-31) and Olivet (50-20) with Calvin falling to Alma (55-6) and Adrian (48-17). Calvin's win over Olivet came last Saturday, extending its two-game win streak and marking its first-ever win in the month of November. Calvin faces its sixth MIAA conference opponent on Saturday in #16 Hope. Hope is 7-1 on the year including 4-1 in league play and is ranked 16th by both D3football.com and the American Football Coaches Association. Hope is coming off a 62-0 victory at Albion last Saturday.
- About Calvin - Calvin is paced on offense by sophomore running back Hunter Hogan who has 1,261 all-purpose yards with 789 yards rushing (5.5 ypc) and eight touchdowns. Hogan has also hauled in 30 catches for 337 yards. Sophomore quarterback Thomas Vaccaro has connected 144 of 237 pass attempts (.607) for 1,500 yards and 15 touchdowns. He has been intercepted five times. Sophomores Luke Michmerhuizen, Jude Klunder and Seth Anderson have been his top receiving targets. Michmerhuizen has 43 catches, 520 yards and eight touchdown receptions. Klunder has 27 grabs for 233 yards and three touchdowns. Sophomore Seth Anderson has 17 catches for 180 yards and two touchdowns. On defense, sophomore Carson Schnurstein has an MIAA-leading 100 tackles (45 solo) including 14 tackles for loss. Sophomore Caden Kolanowski has 54 tackles (24 solo) with sophomore Kaden McCullough contributing 50 tackles (24 solo), five sacks and 10 tackles for loss. Sophomore Caiden Bolduc has 37 tackles, eight sacks, 11 tackles for loss and has returned one interception for a touchdown.
- About Hope - Hope is led by dynamic junior quarterback Alex Thole. A transfer from Grand Valley State, Thole has amassed 2,207 all-purpose yards this season. He is completing 73.8 percent (155-210) of his pass attempts for 2096 yards and 17 touchdowns. On the ground, he has rushed 61 times for 111 yards and four touchdowns. Hope features a three-pronged rushing attack led by sophomore AJ Martel who has 470 yards on 85 carries for a team-high nine touchdowns. Freshman Trey Golke has 56 carries for 401 yards and four touchdowns with sophomore Kal Motter rushing 49 times for 369 yards and four scores. Junior Johnny Rohen-Blanton is the top receiving target with 43 catches for 606 yards and three touchdowns. Senior Travis Myers has 28 catches for 523 yards and five touchdowns. Junior Kaden DeHorn and junior Trevor Griffiths have 19 catches apiece. DeHorn has 314 receiving yards and Griffiths 254 yards. Senior linebacker Colton Schreur has a team-best 48 tackles (24 solo). Senior Liam Danitz has been a fierce pash-rusher. The 2025 MIAA Most Valuable Indoor Track Athlete, Danitz has 17 tackles for loss including 11 sacks. Danitz was the MIAA outdoor champion in the 100 and 200 meter dash last May, winning the 200 in a league-record time of 20.94. He won the 2025 MIAA Indoor title in a league-record time of 21.59 last March.
- NPI – Calvin and Hope both sit high in the Division III National Power Index – the metric used to determine seeding and at-large bids for the upcoming NCAA III Football playoffs. The power index is heavily weighted on victories against NCAA Division III opponents and creates extra points based on the success of opponents as the season progress (I.E. Strength of Schedule). Hope has the top Division III NPI of any MIAA football program as it is ranked #22 (66.258) in the Division III NPI. Alma has the next-best of any MIAA school at #36 (65.017) with Calvin the fourth-best holding down the #48 spot (61.502). Calvin owns a high-quality win over Concordia of Wisconsin. Calvin's 34-7 win over the Falcons on September 13 is the only defeat Concordia has suffered this fall as the 8-1 Falcons have already clinched the NACC automatic bid for the upcoming NCAA III Playoffs. Calvin's win over Concordia is one of two for the Knights against teams with winning records as Heidelberg is currently 5-3. Adrian ranks third in the MIAA in terms of NPI as the Bulldogs have an NPI ranking of 62.186. There are 241 NCAA Division III football programs with an NPI rating.
- Last Year's Meeting – Hope defeated Calvin 38-7 in a game played November 9 at Grand Rapids Christian High School. Hope scored 21 first quarter points and led 35-0 at halftime. Calvin picked up a fourth quarter touchdown on a 32-yard pass from Chase Bradman to Seth Ritsema. Ben Wellman of Hope was 9 of 20 passing for 220 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for one. Tyler Amos ran for 125 yards and two touchdowns. Bradman was 17 of 22 passing for 169 yards and a touchdown. Jaier Harden ran for 60 yards. Ritsema had five catches for 82 yards and a touchdown. Cole Luhmann had 10 tackles for Hope. Paul VanderPloeg had 16 tackles and Gage Jones 13 tackles for the Knights. Trevor Martens also had 12 stops.
- Calvin Week Eight Rewind – Calvin pulled away for a 50-20 victory over The University of Olivet last Saturday. Calvin led 21-14 at halftime and outscored the Comets 22-6 in the fourth quarter to seal the win. Calvin rushed for 280 yards and six touchdowns – three by sophomore Nick Earles and two by sophomore Hayden Slegers. Sophomore Thomas Vaccaro also rushed for a score. Slegers rushed for 93 yards on 7 carries while Earles had 84 yards on 22 carries. Sophomore Hunter Hogan had 54 yards and Vaccaro 48 yards on the ground. Vaccaro was 15 of 28 passing for 160 yards and a touchdown. His touchdown strike was an eight-yard pass to sophomore Luke Michmerhuizen. Michmerhuizen had four catches for 47 yards. Hogan led Calvin's receivers with five catches for 73 yards. Sophomore Carson Schnurstein led the Calvin defense with 12 tackles, an interception, one forced fumble and one pass break-up. Sophomore Kaden McCullough had eight tackles including three for loss and one sack.
- Hope Week Eight Rewind – Hope rolled to its largest-ever victory over Albion, handing the Britons a 62-0 defeat at Sprankle-Sprandel Field. Hope led 34-0 at halftime and kept the pressure on in the second half in rolling to the win. Quarterback Alex Thole was 15 of 20 passing for 258 yards and three touchdowns. Kal Motter rushed for 113 yards and a touchdown. Kaden DeHorn had five catches for 85 yards. Three different receivers had a touchdown catch. Liam Danitz tallied seven tackles which included 3.5 for loss and 1.5 for sacks.
- The Calvin Coach-Head coach Trent Figg was hired on January 6, 2023. He has a career won-loss record of 8-10 heading into Saturday. Figg is a native of Chillicothe, Missouri, located an hour-and-a-half from Kansas City. He is a 2008 graduate of William Jewell College where he was a four-year member of the football program as a special teams ace and defensive back. He later earned his master's degree from Northwest Missouri State in 2013. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at (then NAIA) William Jewell and later had stints as the special teams coordinator and defensive coordinator at D2 Southern Arkansas, defensive coordinator at William Jewell and special teams coordinator at Missouri State. He later spent two years (2019-21) at the University of Hawaii, serving as chief of staff of the football program and later associate head coach. In 2022, he served as the lead offensive analyst for the University of Oregon football program under head coach Dan Lanning. Figg and Lanning are former teammates and roommates at William Jewell College and stood up for each other at their respective weddings.
- A Look at the Hope Coach – Hope is under the direction of ninth-year head coach Peter Stuursma who is a 1993 graduate of Hope. As a student, Stuursma was a four-year member of the football program at Hope and a team co-captain his senior year. He earned his master's degree from the University of Northern Colorado in 1998 and was a graduate assistant football coach on the school's 1997 Division II National Championship team. He later went on to a decorated high school coaching career at East Grand Rapids High School, leading the school to seven state championships. He has been at the helm of the Hope football program since 2016 and has fashioned a won-loss record of 72-19 including MIAA titles in 2019, 2021 and 2024. Of note, Stuursma has ties to Calvin as his grandfather Herman "Fuzz Van Faasen was Calvin's first great point guard in men's basketball, starring on Calvin teams in the late 1930s and early 1940s with Calvin winning a pair of Michigan Ontario Collegiate Conference (MOCC) titles. Calvin was a member of the MOCC prior to joining the MIAA in 1953..
- More on Hunter Hogan – Calvin sophomore running back Hunter Hogan has had a big season for the Knights with 789 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns. He opened the season with four straight 100-yard rushing games, going for 119 yards against Oberlin, 215 against Concordia, 233 at Heidelberg and 115 against Kalamazoo. He has also hauled in 30 grabs for 337 yards and a score. He is averaging 157.63 all-purpose yards a game, ranking 13th nationally. His 789 total rushing yards also ranks 28th nationally.
- Splitting the Carries – The Calvin rushing attack has turned into a three-pronged attack with Hogan getting the bulk of the carries heading into league play. Sophomores Nick Earles and Hayden Slegers has come on as of late to add to the Calvin Ground Game. Earles has 71 carries for 294 yards and six touchdowns. Slegers has 47 carries for 237 yards and three touchdowns. A week ago, Calvin rushed for 280 yards on 46 carries for its highest rush yardage since its week two win over Concordia when the Knights ran for 289 yards.
- MIAA Preseason Poll – Calvin was picked to finish seventh out of eight teams in the 2025 MIAA preseason poll with champion Alma selected as the MIAA's pre-season favorite and defending MIAA champion Hope picked a close second. 2025 MIAA Preseason Poll: 1. - NCAA III Statistics Leaders – Hunter Hogan is ranked 13th in the latest NCAA III statistics in all-purpose yards-per-game (157.63). He is ranked 28th nationally in total rushing yards (789) and 32nd nationally in rushing yards per game (98.6). Carson Schnurstein is ranked fourth nationally in total tackles (100), 13th in tackles for loss per game (1.81) and 27th in solo tackles (45). Caiden Bolduc is tied for 27th in tackles for loss per game (1.57). As a team, Calvin is ranked 24th nationally in rushing offense (215.0 yards per game). As a team, Hope is ranked fourth in completion percentage (.737), seventh in first down offense (206 yards), 10th in rushing defense (80.4), 25th in rushing offense (214.8 yards per game), 17th in scoring offense (43.6 ppg), 14th in tackles for loss per game (8.0), ninth in average time of possession (33:45) and fifth in total offense (507.8). Quarterback Alex Thole ranks fifth nationally in completion percentage (.738) & 11th in passing efficiency (181.5). Liam Danitz ranks second nationally in sacks per game (1.38) and third in tackles for loss per game (2.13).
- MIAA Stats Roundup – In conference games only, Hope is averaging 43.6 points a game on offense (2nd) and allowing 20.4 points a game on defense (2nd). Calvin is averaging 26.2 points a game on offense (5th) and 34.0 points a game on defense (4th). (Conference games only): Alex Thole leads the MIAA in quarterback efficiency (178.5) and is second in the league in passing yards (1,283) and passing touchdowns (13). Calvin's Hudson Shoup is sixth in the MIAA in kick return yards per game (22.8) while sophomore Caden Kolanowski is second in punt return yards per game (7.4). Calvin's Drake Irwin is second in the MIAA in yards per punt (40.7). Calvin's Carson Schnurstein is second in total tackles (56). Kaden McCullough is seventh in total tackles (42) and Kolanowski eighth (38). Hope's Liam Danitz leads the MIAA in tackles for loss (14) while McCullough is second (10). Danitz leads the MIAA in sacks (7) while McCullough is fourth (5) and Caiden Bolduc fifth (4). Hope's Owen Graham leads the league in interceptions (6). Schnurstein is tied for fourth in interceptions (2).
- MIAA Weekly Honors – Sophomore quarterback/punter Drake Irwin was named MIAA Special Teams Player of the Week this past Monday after averaging 42.5 yards per punt in a win over Olivet last week. He downed a pair of punts inside the Olivet 20. Sophomore Kaden McCullough was named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week October 27 for his play in a 34-31 win over Trine Oct. 25. Freshman return specialist/wide receiver Hudson Shoup was named MIAA Special Teams Player of the Week for his kick returns totaling 75 yards in the win over Trine. Carson Schnurstein was named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 29 for his 10-tackle performance in Calvin's win over Kalamazoo on September 27. Luke Michmerhuizen was named the MIAA Offensive Player of the Week and Caiden Bolduc named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week on September 22 for their efforts in Calvin's victory at Heidelberg. Hunter Hogan was named MIAA Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 15 for the Knights.
- National Honors – Sophomore linebacker Caiden Bolduc was named to the D3football.com National Team of the Week on Sept. 23 for his play in Calvin's win at Heidelberg in week three. It marked the second straight week a Calvin linebacker has received the honor as Carson Schnurstein was named to the D3football.com Team of the Week for week two. This past Tuesday, Schnurstein was named the Walter Camp Division III National Defensive Player of the Week.
- A Look at Calvin – Once again, Calvin features one of the younger rosters in America this fall as the Knights feature 38 freshmen and 67 sophomores as part of their 116-man roster. 13 players feature from other states including Illinois (4), Texas (2), California (1), Louisiana (1), Tennessee (1), North Carolina (1), Florida (1), New Mexico (1) and New York (1) with the remaining 103 coming from Michigan.

- The Quarterback Room – Sophomore transfer Thomas Vaccaro has been selected to start at quarterback on Saturday with sophomore Drake Irwin his backup. Vaccaro is a transfer from Samford University (Ala.) where he spent two years which included a redshirt season. He is a graduate of Christ Presbyterian Academy in Nashville, Tennessee. Vaccaro was Irwin is a local product out of Rockford High School. He appeared in five games in 2024, completing 7 of 9 passes with one touchdown. At Rockford High School, he led the Rams to a Division I District Title his senior year. Also listed at quarterback are true freshmen Beau Harris and Amari Powell.
- Receiving Unit – The Calvin starting receiver unit features a strong West Michigan flavor as Luke Michmherhuizen (Holland Christian), Seth Anderson (Rockford) and Jude Klunder (Grand Rapids Christian HS) are listed as starters today. Sophomore Hunter Hogan (Ravenna HS) will also see receiving looks out of the backfield. Sophomores Shamar White (East Kentwood HS) and McCoy Baxter (Rockford HS) are listed as key backups.The 6-7 Michmerhuizen is the second member of his immediate family to be a Calvin varsity athlete as his older sister Nicole was a multiple All-American for the Calvin women's track and field team including a national champion in the 10,000 meter run in 2013.
- OK-Red Flavor – The Calvin football team has a strong representation from the Ottawa-Kent (OK) Red Conference as Rockford (Seth Anderson, Drake Irwin, Mike Liggett, Jonah Carlson, McCoy Baxter, Gavin Currie), Jenison (Zaiden Chirco, Rowan Stewart, Colin Diekman, Trevor Martens) and East Kentwood (KJ Harp, ShaMar White, Breylon Cox, Kenji Nou, Gabe Wolf), Grand Haven (Logan Minier) and Grandville (Aven Kaat) are all represented on the Calvin roster with a total of 17 O K Red alumni.
- Cousin Connection – Sophomore quarterback Drake Irwin and sophomore wide receiver Jude Klunder are first cousins.
- Classroom Distinction – The 2025 Calvin football team features 17 individuals were named to the 2024-25 MIAA Academic Honor Roll for maintaining a 3.50 grade point average or above for the entire academic year while earning a varsity letter. Those 17 individuals include: Paul Bouma, Peter DeKruyter, Colin Diekman, Tate Dohm, Ben Ernstes, Noah Funk, Andrew Helmus, Drake Irwin, Brady Jacobs, Caden Kolanowski, Peter Markvluwer, Trevor Martens, Luke Michmerhuizen, Micah Pobursky, Hayden Slegers, Conner Smits and Brayden Steinbacher.
- Transfer Portal – Calvin has nine players that have transferred over from other collegiate football programs. Those nine individuals are senior Jair Nowlin (Greenville University), senior Charlie Garbowski (Finlandia University), junior Alex Minnehan (Grand Valley State), junior C.J. Sheets (Davenport University), junior Sam Gallo (Concordia, Mich.), sophomore Wyatt Young (Saginaw Valley State University), sophomore Thomas Vaccaro (Samford University), sophomore Tyler Porte (Central Michigan University) and sophomore Carter Bylsma (Dordt University).
- Just for Kicks – Calvin's lead kicker is sophomore Logan Nap from Lawton, Michigan. He also serves as one of Calvin's punters. Sophomore Drake Irwin has assumed Calvin's full-time duty as punter, averaging 41.3 yards per punt.
- Traveling from Out-of-State – Calvin features 13 players from outside Michigan. Those players include senior Jair Nowlin (Sugarhill, Georgia), junior Alexander Minneham (Lakeville, New York), sophomore Tripp Moore (Millsap, Texas), sophomore Hayden Slegers (Ontario, California), sophomore Thomas Vaccaro (Franklin, Tenn.), sophomore Kai Hanog (Weatherford, Texas), sophomore Max Lenters (Palos Heights, Illinois), freshman Hudson Shoup (Charlotte, N.C.), junior C.J. Sheets (Longwood, Fla..), freshman Christian Flutman (Orland Park, Il.), freshman Chase Sytsma (Orland Park, Il..), freshman Ryan Ramirez (Albuquerque, N.M.), freshman Edward Van Dellen (Evergreen Park, Ill.).
- Whitehall Claims First Dibs – The first recruit to commit to the Calvin University football program was redshirt freshman Winton Napier who is slated to start at left tackle. Napier is one of four graduates of Whitehall High School on the Calvin roster joined by sophomore linebacker Trenton TenBrock, sophomore linebacker Jackson Cook and freshman offensive lineman Connor Nash.
- High Schools Represented – The high schools with the most represented players are: Hudsonville Unity Christian (7), Rockford (6), Holland Christian (5), East Kentwood (5), Grand Rapids Christian (4) and Jenison High School (4).
