Calvin Women's Basketball Falls in Nail-Biter Against Colorado College

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Today the Calvin women's basketball team took on the Tigers from Colorado College on day two of the Calvin/Hope Classic. After a nail-biter of a contest the Knights were defeated by the Tigers and fell to a 1-3 overall record.

In the first quarter, both teams battled for momentum as they traded baskets and the lead throughout the first ten minutes. Junior Hannah Sall (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and senior Anna Fernandez (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth Christian Academy) got going early offensively while Jamie Custer (Galena, Ohio/Worthington Christian) and Lydia Sall (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) both recorded blocked shots on the defensive side of the ball. As the first ten minutes of play ran out a last second three pointer from Colorado College gave the Tigers a slim three-point lead heading into the second quarter.

Both teams continued to produce offensively as junior RyAnn Rohrer (Ludington, Mich./Ludington) and senior Emma Witte (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) got in on the scoring action for the Knights. With two minutes left in the second quarter, the Knights took a one-point lead thanks to two free throws from Lydia Sall. However, the Tigers responded quickly as they went on a 5-0 to close out the half and headed into halftime with a 35-31 lead over Calvin.

Looking to bounce back, the Knights ramped up their offense as they posted 19 points in the third quarter while shooting 44.44 percent, their best shooting percentage of the night. On the other side of the ball, Colorado College continued to have an answer as they matched Calvin's 19 points and retained their four-point lead after the third quarter.

Down the stretch, Calvin worked relentlessly to make up ground and with just over six minutes left in regulation a bucket from Fernandez evened the score at 58-58. However, the tie was short lived as a quick three from Colorado College on the other end of the floor put the Tigers back in the driver's seat. After trading several more baskets, the Knights found themselves down two points with just thirty seconds left on the clock. Now, desperate for a bucket Calvin went back to their bread and butter play and found Hannah Sall down low on the block.

She collected the ball and spun toward the basket for what the Knights believed to be the game tying basket. However, just as the ball fell through the hoop, the whistle blew and Hannah Sall was called for an offensive foul which resulted in the basket to be waived off. As the seconds ticked off the game clock the Knights were unable to find any more scoring opportunities and they fell to the Tigers 64-61.

Fernandez finished the game as the Knights leading scorer with seventeen points and eight rebounds while Lydia Sall chipped in thirteen points. Custer and Hannah Sall each had seven points while RyAnn Rohrer (Ludington, Mich./Ludington) notched six points and a team high eleven rebounds.
