WILMINGTON, Ohio - Tonight, the Calvin women's basketball team put on a dominant performance to breeze past the Quakers of Wilmington and hand head coach
Mark Christner his 100th career win. With tonight's win the Knights move to a 2-3 overall record.
Â
After getting off to a bit of a slow start the Knights looked to find their rhythm with back-to-back layups from
Anna Fernandez (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth Christian Academy) and
Katelyn LaRue (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) getting the ball rolling. Junior
Hannah Sall (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) chipped in a bucket down low while also snagging a pair of rebounds and making her presence known down low. On the other end of the floor, the Quakers had answers with buckets of their own and after one quarter of play Calvin trailed 11-14 after the first ten minutes of play.
Â
As the second quarter got underway offense came early and often for both teams as LaRue nailed a shot from behind the arc just seconds into play to even the score. Wilmington answered with a fair of free throws and a jumper of their own before the Knights took control and went on a 10-0 run halfway through the quarter. Fernandez and LaRue led the attack while junior
RyAnn Rohrer (Ludington, Mich./Ludington) also got in on the scoring action. Calvin had outscored the Quakers 25-9 by the end of the quarter and headed into halftime with a commanding 36-23 lead.
Â
In the second half the Knights continued to dominate play as they outscored Wilmington 46-28 as they sailed to a 82-51 victory. Calvin posted their best shooting performance of the season with a 50.8 shooting percentage while shooting 33.3 percent from three-point range. The Knights dominated the paint as they recorded 40 points down low and saw big contributions from their bench as they contributed 31 points. Defensively, they held the Quakers to a 32.0 shooting percentage and forced 25 turnovers.Â
Â
LaRue and Fernandez both finished with 15 points while Rohrer was close behind with 12 points.
Hannah Sall finished her evening with nine points with
Lydia Sall (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and
Jamie Custer (Galena, Ohio/Worthington Christian) each chipping in six points.
Â
COACHES COMMENTS: "Solid performance for us after a short time off," said head coach
Mark Christner. "We have played a little shorthanded all year so far. Our team collectively grew today. I loved our response after a challenging first quarter."
