Calvin Men's Soccer Falls to Messiah in Second Round of NCAA III Tournament

GENEVA, NY – Calvin's run through the NCAA III Tournament came to an end with a 3-0 loss to Messiah University in the second round of tournament play Saturday afternoon on the campus of Hobart College.

Saturday's contest featured a lengthy weather delay after the teams had played a scoreless opening 39 minutes.

Messiah (13-7-2) threatened on a number of occasions in the opening 20 minutes but failed to score as Calvin's backline cleared the ball out of the six-yard box with senior goalkeeper Zac Moore (Pilesgrove, N.J..Woodstown) also coming up with several key defensive plays.

Calvin (17-4-1) also had chances early as a one-timer by senior Jonah Meyer-Crothers (Sylvania, Oh./Sylvania Northview HS) sailed over the bar in the 10th minute and a shot inside the 18-yard box by sophomore James Jackson (Cleves, Ohio/ Saint Xavier) in the 12th minute was saved by Messiah goalkeeper Forrest Kessler.

Thunderstorms swept through the area with just over five minutes left in the first half, forcing a weather delay of nearly and hour-and-a-half.

The teams returned to play after the delay with no scoring in the final five minutes of the first half.

Messiah struck 10 minutes into the second half after a Calvin defensive miscue led to a clean break on goal. Messiah's Patrick Lee made good on the opportunity, firing the ball into the lower left hand corner of the net for a 1-0 Falcon lead. Just over three minutes later, another Calvin defensive miscue led to a clean chance for the Falcons and Sam Phillips was able to convert to give Messiah a 2-0 lead. Phillips added a second goal two-and-a-half minutes later to build a commanding 3-0 lead which Messiah saw out to the finish.

Messiah finished the match with a 21-9 shots at goal advantage. Moore had five saves in goal in his final game in a Calvin uniform.

The win also snapped a six-game win streak that included five tournament wins (MIAA or NCAA) despite the Knights playing without several players sidelined by injuries.

COACHES COMMENT: "Tough way to go out," said Calvin head men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "Credit to Messiah as they've a very good team. We had some moments but just felt like we ran outta gas. So proud of the group though. To pick themselves up and respond after lots of opportunities to stay on the mat this season says so much about its collective character. While we're disappointed, it's an honor to be associated with these men and am so glad to call them ours."
