GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Calvin got back on the winning track with a 5-0 non-conference win over The University of Olivet. The contest was the final tune-up for the Knights before they head into conference play next week.
Junior
Matt Torrell (Rochester, N.Y. /The Charles Finney School) led the way with a hat-trick performance, scoring twice in the first half and once more in the second half as the Knights improved to 8-2-0 with the win.
Freshman
Will Lanham (Commerce Township, Mich./Notre Dame Prep) scored his fourth goal of the season, tapping in a shot off crossing passes from sophomore
Jake Ziolo (Dublin, Oh./Dublin Jerome HS) and junior
Zac Brooks (Lone Tree, Colo./Valor Christian HS) in the sixth minute of play.
Torrell picked up his first goal of the game in the 23
rd minute, tipping in a shot from the top of the box sent in by Brooks with Torrell deflecting the shot in close past the Olivet keeper for a 2-0 Knight lead.
Less than two minutes later, Torrell received a lead pass from Brooks, took two touches on the break and slipped a left-footed shot into the back of the net for a 3-0 Calvin lead.
In the 59
th minute, Torrell gave the Knights a 4-0 lead, receiving a pass into the box from sophomore teammate
James Jackson (Cleves, Ohio/Saint Xavier HS). Torrell took a touch and then bent a curling shot just inside the far post for a 4-0 advantage.
Calvin completed the scoring in the 61
st minute as senior
Athan Ladas (Parsippany, N.J./Parsippany Hills HS) received a cross from junior
Osiel Peguero (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic/The Kiski School) near the top of the 18-yard box. Ladas teed up the pass and cracked a left-footed blast that tucked inside the near post for a 5-0 lead.
Calvin finished the contest with a 17-3 shots at goal advantage. Senior
Zac Moore (Pilesgrove, N.J./Woodstown HS) went the first 62 minutes, recording one save. Sophomore
John Hargett (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy HS)went the next 16 minutes and sophomore
Owen Plug (Austin, Texas/Westwood HS) the final 10 minutes as the trio combined for the clean sheet in goal.
At halftime of Saturday's game, Calvin honored the four members of its senior class which included
Athan Ladas,
Zac Moore,
Hans Pruis (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and
Jonah Meyer-Crothers (Sylvania, Oh./Sylvania Northview HS).
COACHES COMMENT: "Always good to get a win at home," said Calvin head men's soccer coach
Ryan Souders. "Certainly it was special to be able to honor our seniors today as well. Some really good ball movement and some nice goals, for sure. Now we head to league play with our first one out in Holland. We'll need as much of Knight Nation as possible to come out and support!"
NEXT UP: Calvin will head to rival Hope on Tuesday for a 7 p.m. contest at Van Andel Stadium in the league opener for both teams.
