HOLLAND, Mich. – The Calvin-Hope men's soccer rivalry was renewed on Tuesday night and for the second consecutive year, the two rivals fought to a 1-1 tie in their season opener.
A year ago, Calvin and Hope met in their league opener at Calvin Soccer Stadium with the teams finishing in a 1-1 draw.
Tuesday's match at Hope's Van Andel Stadium was hotly contested and highly entertaining to the 1,016 fans gathered for the rivalry matchup.
The two sides probed back-and-forth through the first 20 minutes of the match before the Flying Dutchmen began to descend on the Calvin net, throwing waves of attackers at the Knight goal.
Hope (4-5-2 overall, 0-0-1 MIAA) broke through for the first goal in the 25
th minute. Hope fired two successive shots that were saved by Calvin senior goalkeeper
Zac Moore (Pilesgrove, N.J./Woodstown)but the second rebound came to the feet of Seth Walters who blasted a shot into the top shelf of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Calvin (8-2-1 overall, 0-0-1 MIAA) met the challenge a minute-and-a-half later as junior
Matt Torrell (Rochester, N.Y./The Charles Finney School) broke free through the left wing and with an inside-outside move fed a through ball into the Hope box. Running onside, junior
Zac Brooks (Lone Tree, Colo./Valor Christian) was able to beat the Hope backline and blast a shot inside the far post to knot the score 1-1.
In the second half, the opening 20 minutes of possession belonged to Hope but Calvin's backline stood firm, holding the Flying Dutchmen without a shot.
Calvin began to turn the tables on Hope with possession and also began to create significant scoring chances. In the 72
nd minute, Torrell crammed a low shot off a free kick by freshman
Odis Fickel (Holland, Mich./Holland HS) that was saved by a Hope defender.
In the 76
th minute, Calvin appeared to have taken a 2-1 lead on a shot in the box by freshman Toby Simeone (Riverside, Australia/St. Patrick's College) off a lead pass from sophomore
Jake Ziolo (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) but a delayed off-sides call waved off the goal.
In the 79
th minute, Simeone sent a cross into the box that Fickel latched onto. Fickel uncorked a left-footed shot that deflected off a Hope defender's leg and skipped off the crossbar.
Torrell headed a shot in the 83
rd minute that was snared by Hope goalkeeper Daniel Morgan.
Hope had a pair of corner kicks in the closing minutes as well as a dangerous free kick that was punched out of danger by Moore.
Calvin's final scoring chance came in the 88
th minute as Simeone broke free through the right wing but saw his shot sail a foot wide of the far post.
Calvin finished with a 21-12 shots at goal advantage including 13-0 in the second half. Moore had six saves in goal for Calvin while Morgan had six saves in goal for Hope.
COACHES COMMENT: "Rivalry games are always intense and always close and we knew that coming in," said Calvin head men's soccer coach
Ryan Souders. "Credit to Hope. They're a good team that is well-coached. They executed the game plan they wanted to and I credit them for that. At the same time, I felt like we did enough to earn three points tonight. We were all over the net, had a goal called back and hit the post. We'll take the one point tonight but we would have liked to have had three."
NEXT UP: Calvin will host Trine Saturday night at 7 p.m. in a key conference game at Calvin Soccer Stadium.
