Calvin Women's Cross Country Takes 10th in Gold Division of Notre Dame Joe Piane Invitational

RESULTS

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The 24th-ranked Calvin women's cross country team had a strong showing at the Notre Dame Joe Piane Invitational on Friday. Competing in a field of Division I teams, Calvin took 10th in the Gold Division with a team score of 281 points.

Friday's race was 5K in distance on the Notre Dame Golf Course. Calvin was part of 22 teams competing in the Blue Division race. The University of Windsor took first place with a team score of 73 points.

Senior Sophie Bull (Denver, Co./Denver Christian HS) sparkled once again for the Knights, placing fourth individually in a time of 17:23.9. Bull was the top Division III runner on Friday in a field that also included ranked Division III teams from (16th) Wisconsin-La Crosse and the (4th) University of Chicago.

Junior Hailey Erickson (Arlington Heights, Il./Prospect HS) was Calvin's second finisher, crossing the line in 56th place in a time of 18:41.4. Freshman Emma Wierenga (Grafton, Mass./Whitinsville Christian) was 71st in a time of 18:49.1, senior Catie Kramer (Pickering, Ontario/Dunbarton) 78th in 18:59.1 and freshman Ayla Holben 79th in 18:59.3 to round out Calvin's top five. Calvin featured a gap of 1:36 between its first and fifth runners.

Sophomore Alexis Ball (Grand Rapids, Mich./Traverse City Central) was close behind in 81st (19:00.3) and freshman Brynn Ellenbecker (Itasca, Ill./ Lake Park) 84th in 19:02.2.

Mercy Jebitok of Akron University was the top individual finisher in the race in a time of 16:57.4.

COACHES COMMENT: "Every meet this squad continues learning how to race stronger together," said Calvin head cross country coach Nicole Kramer. "I'm very happy with how we executed the crowded and warm atmosphere today. This was a great experience for these women to build towards our late-season meets. Sophie put herself in the mix early and moved up nicely from 8th to 4th, again as the top DIII finisher. Emma had an impressive race, passing 81 runners from early on to help spur on her teammates and be our third (finisher) for the team. Looking forward to another exciting day tomorrow on the home course!"

NEXT UP: Calvin will host its own Knight Invitational on Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Gainey Athletic Complex.
