GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin University women's volleyball team continued its strong run in league play with a 3-0 win over Kalamazoo College by the scores of 25-11, 25-15 and 25-19 on Wednesday night at Van Noord Arena.
Calvin (19-3, 4-1 MIAA) was strong on the defensive end with 10 blocks and held Kalamazoo (9-15, 1-5 MIAA) to a -.099 attack efficiency for the match.
The Knights came out strong to start the match with a dominant 25-11 win to take a 1-0 overall lead.
Allison Moore (Jupiter, Fla./Jupiter Christian) led the attack with four kills while
Emma Ekblaw (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) added three kills and two blocks.
The second set was more of the same with the Knights building an early lead before cruising to a 2-0 lead in the match with a 25-15 set-two win.
Sarah Bradley (Clarkston, Mich./Everest Collegiate) came alive on the attack for Calvin with six kills and four digs in the set. Ekblaw added two more blocks and
Grace Spoelma (Caledonia, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) had eight assists.
The Hornets fought hard in a third set that featured eight ties and three lead changes, but Calvin broke free late and scored eight of the set's final ten points to come away with a 25-19 set and secured the sweep. Bradley added six more kills and two blocks in the set.
Mary Boa (Atlanta, Ga./Riverwood International Charter) led the front row defense with three blocks.
Bradley finished the night with a match-high 12 kills to lead the Calvin hitters. Moore finished with seven kills, while
Madison Wiersema (Fremont, Mich./Western Michigan Christian/Arkansas State) chipped in six kills.
Ekblaw led the Knights with six blocks to go with five kills. Spoelma finished with 17 assists.
Tryna Vander Zwaag (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian) led the team with 16 digs.
COACH'S COMMENT: "I thought we started playing really well," Calvin head women's volleyball coach Dr.
Amber Warners said. "I thought we served and passed quite well the first two sets. We just couldn't find our rhythm in the third set."
NEXT UP: Calvin women's volleyball returns to action on Friday, October 24, when it hosts Alma College in a non-conference match at Van Noord Arena starting at 6:30 PM.
