Calvin Women’s Volleyball Tops Alma in Three

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin University women's volleyball team extended its winning streak to eight with a 3-0 non- conference win over Alma College by the scores of 25-14, 25-12 and 25-21 on Friday night at Van Noord Arena.

Calvin (20-3) jumped in front early in each of the first two sets before having to fight off Alma (9-14) throughout the third set to earn the sweep.

The Knights jumped on top of the Scots 9-4 in the first set and then finished the set on a 13-4 run to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Sarah Bradley (Clarkston, Mich./Everest Collegiate) recorded five kills and three service aces to lead the way and Aerin Baker (Saugatuck, Mich./Saugatuck) added four kills in the set.

Calvin opened the second set on a 10-2 run and never looked back on the way to a 2-0 lead overall. Emma Ekblaw (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) served three aces, while Baker, Bradley and Mary Boa (Atlanta, Ga./Riverwood International Charter) each recorded three kills to lead the attack.

The Scots would not go away quietly in the third and hung around late with only a 22-20 deficit, but kills from Madison Wiersema (Fremont, Mich./Western Michigan Christian/Arkansas State) and Bradley helped push the Knights over the finish line to secure the 3-0 win.

Bradley led the Calvin attack with 12 kills and added seven digs. Baker finished with 11 kills in her return to action. Ekblaw recorded six kills, four blocks and four aces.

Delaney Kemp (Frisco, Texas/Frisco Centennial) recorded a double-double with 18 assists and 13 digs. Lina Kasuboski (Racine, Wis./Union Grove) finished with a team-high 16 digs.

COACH'S COMMENT: "I thought we did a good job keeping our composure when we weren't playing great," Calvin head women's volleyball coach Dr. Amber Warners said. "To be honest, our passing just wasn't really on tonight, which kept us from doing even better things. So I was really happy with the way that our setters dealt with that and the way our hitters dealt with that. But we'll take it because you've just got to come and play. We'll keep getting in the gym and keep getting better, but I was happy that they stayed focused the whole way through."

NEXT UP: Calvin women's volleyball will return to action on Friday, October 31, when it travels to Albion College for a match scheduled to start at 6:30 PM.
