Calvin Men's Soccer Topples Trine in Key Conference Contest

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Calvin picked up a key 2-0 conference victory over Trine Saturday night at Calvin Soccer Stadium. The win keeps the Knights in the think of the MIAA title race as they improved to 1-0-1 in league play, two points behind league-leading Albion (2-0-0). The Knights are in a four-way tie for second place with Adrian, Hope and Kalamazoo all at 1-0-1 in league play.

Calvin scored a goal in each half while holding the Trine offensive attack at bay.

Freshman Will Lanham (Commerce Township, Mich. / Notre Dame Prep) got Calvin on the board in the 19th minute as he stole a failed Trine clearance near the top of the six-yard box and slipped a left-footed shot past Trine goalkeeper Brandon Walker for a 1-0 lead. The goal was the fifth of the year for Lanham.

The lead held up through the first half.

Trine (1-10-1 overall, 0-2-0 MIAA)) had a significant scoring chance early in the second half as Mohamed Aljably pounced on a Calvin turnover inside the 18-yard box, turned and fired a shot just wide of the far post.

Freshman Odis Fickel (Holland, Mich./Holland HS) nearly doubled Calvin's lead in the 53rd minute as he fired back-to-back shots at the Trine goal. His first shot was blocked. His rebound attempt skipped off the top of the Trine crossbar.

Trine had a dangerous free kick just outside the Calvin 18-yard box in the 77th minute but the shot was blocked. Calvin (9-2-2 overall) scored the clinching goal in the 84th minute off the foot of junior Zac Brooks (Lone Tree, Colo./Valor Christian HS). The scoring-play began with a move into the box by junior Matt Torrell (Rochester, N.Y./The Charles Finney School). Torrell's shot was saved by Walker but the rebound came right to the feet of Brooks who fired the shot into a wide-open net with Torrell picking up the assist on the play. The goal was the fourth of the year for Brooks.

Senior Zac Moore (Pilesgrove, NJ/Woodstown HS) picked up the clean sheet in goal for the Knights. Brandon Walker had two saves in goal for Trine.

COACHES COMMENT: "No easy wins in the MIAA," said Calvin head men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "Trine made it exceptionally difficult for us so a credit to them and their coaching staff. We'll take the points and look forward to another matchup against Olivet next Wednesday."

NEXT UP: Calvin will host Olivet next Wednesday at 7 p.m. in a conference match at Calvin Soccer Stadium.
