GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin University men's soccer team earned a 4-0 win over The University of Olivet on Wednesday in MIAA play at the Calvin Soccer Stadium.
Calvin (10-2-1, 2-0-1 MIAA) dominated possession for much of the first half as Olivet (1-7-2, 0-3-0) was content to pack it in defensively and look for counter attack opportunities.
The first Calvin chance came on a shot from
Matt Torrell (Webster, N.Y./The Charles Finney School/Liberty University) that rang off the far post in the 30th minute and the Knights would get on the board soon after when
Jake Ziolo (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Jerome) tapped home a crossing pass from Torrell on the far post in the 35th minute to give the Knights a 1-0 lead.
Torrell kept the momentum going four minutes later as he snuck in the right side of the box off a pass from
Osiel Peguero (Santo Domingo, Distrito Nacional/The Kiski School) to put the Knights ahead 2-0.
The Knights added one more first-half goal in the 42nd minute when
Leonardo Oliveira (Miami Beach, Fla./Miami Beach/Gardner Webb University) scored his first collegiate goal off a
Josh Little (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) corner kick to send the game into halftime 3-0.
The Knights continued to control play throughout the second half and added one final insurance tally from
Toby Simeoni (Riverside, Australia/St. Patrick's College/University of Tasmania) in the 86th minute from the left side of the box to the far post for his first Calvin goal to push the Knights to the final 4-0 margin.
Ziolo's goal was his third of the season, while Torrell pushed his team-leading total to nine.
Calvin finished the game with a 17-5 advantage in shots at goal, including a 9-1 edge in shots on goal. The Knights also won 13 corner kicks to three for the Comets.
Zac Moore (Pilesgrove, N.J./Woodstown/UMBC) recorded one save on the way to his third clean sheet of the season.
