Results

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin University indoor men's track and field team competed at Aquinas College in the WHAC vs. MIAA Challenge on Friday night.

The top event for Calvin on the night was the triple jump, where four Knights placed inside the top seven. Luke Nguyen (Houston, Texas/Carl Wunsche Sr.) led the way in second place with a top jump of 12.96 meters. Connor Johnson (Kingsley, Mich./Kingsley) followed in fourth place at 12.9 meters. Aidan Veltkamp (Lynden, Wash./Lynden Christian) took fifth with a jump of 12.47 meters, while Carter Dimsdale (Fort Worth, Texas/Southwest Christian) finished seventh at 12.04 meters.

The marks for Nguyen, Johnson and Veltkamp were good enough to jump into the all-time Calvin indoor track and field top 10 list for the triple jump, with Nguyen jumping into sixth, Johnson in seventh and Veltcamp in 10th place.

Elsewhere in the field events, Zach Van Baren (Hudsonville, Mich./Covenant Christian) finished fourth in the shot put with a top throw of 12.68 meters and also took sixth in the pole vault with a top height of 3.3 meters. Matthew Toldy (Huron, Ohio/Huron) took ninth in the weight throw with a top throw of 13.45 meters.

On the track, two Calvin runners finished in the top five in the 60 meter dash finals. Eze Nwachuku (West Dundee, Ill./Dundee Crown) took third place in 7.2 seconds, followed closely in fifth by Keendrick Castillo-Perez (Comstock Park, Mich./Comstock Park) with a time of 7.31. Nwachuku's time now ranks third in the all-time Calvin indoor top 10 list in that event.

Jaydon Gritters (Hudsonville, Mich./Covenant Christian) finished fifth in the 800 meters in a time of 2:06.56, with Nathan Baker (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) taking sixth in 2:06.9.

In the 1-mile race, Jack DeKruyter (Holland, Mich./Zeeland West) finished seventh in 4:43.22. Justin Vos (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian) took 11th place in 4:47.79 in that event, while Ezekial Hardy (Charlotte, Mich./Capital Homeschool) also took home an 11th place finish in the 3000 meters in 9:37.39.

COACH'S COMMENT: "We had some great showings today at the WHAC vs. MIAA meet hosted by Aquinas," Calvin head track and field coach Adam Haldorson said. "For most of the group competing today, it was their first indoor meet of the season and they put out some big marks! Four of the men put their names in the top-10 Calvin all-time list.  For a smaller meet like this, adding that many new top marks to the record books is outstanding. Beyond the top marks, we also had many people climbing the MIAA ranks as we prepare for the MIAA Indoor Championships in a month. We have a small contingent of distance athletes competing at Notre Dame tomorrow. That should be a great set up for some fast time and fast competition."

NEXT UP: Calvin track and field will send a small group of distance runners to the University of Notre Dame for a meet tomorrow (Saturday, February 1). A larger group will return to action on Friday, February 7, at Trine University.
