Calvin-Hope Women's Basketball Rivalry Set to Tip Off Saturday Night

The 139th meeting between Calvin and Hope in women's basketball is set to take place Saturday at 7 p.m. inside DeVos Fieldhouse.

Team Records - Calvin comes in at 11-8 overall and 7-3 in the MIAA standings. Ranked 16th nationally in one national poll and 21st in another, Hope is 16-3 overall and in second place in the MIAA standings with a 9-1 conference record.

The Series - Calvin leads the all-time series 71-67 but Hope has won the last 19 meetings. Since basketball became an MIAA sport in 1978-79, Hope holds a 65-50 series lead and is 50-15 since 2000. The scoring difference between the teams is 84 points in favor of Calvin. Hope has scored 7,924 points, an average of 57.84 per game. Calvin has scored 8,008 points, an average of 58.45 per game. Five games have gone into overtime with Hope winning four of the five overtime games. Hope won 55–53 in 1995 and in 2001 73–71. Calvin won 63–58 in 2007. Hope triumphed 63–55 in 2017 and Hope won 63–58 in 2018. 31 of the games have been decided by five or fewer points with Calvin holding an 18–13 advantage in those games. In one-point games Calvin leads 3–1 (59–58 in 1981, 61–60 in 1984 and 56–55 in 2011 with Hope winning 70–69 in 2018).


Round One Rewind - Calvin fell to Hope 72-64 on January 4 at Van Noord Arena. Hope got off to a quick start, leading 25-17 after one quarter of play and 42-30 at halftime. Calvin got to within three at 56-53 at the end of three quarters but got no closer the rest of the way. Hope was 6 of 14 from three-point range and was led by Jada Garner with 19 points while Olivia Bellows had 12. Calvin received 18 points from Anna Fernandez and 14 points from Katelyn LaRue. Hope held a 38-33 rebounding advantage. Calvin turned the ball over 18 times.

Offense-Defense - In overall games, Calvin is ranked second in the MIAA in scoring defense (53.0 ppg) but just fourth in scoring offense (59.9 ppg). Calvin is ranked first (overall games) in the MIAA in defensive field goal percentage (.333) and fourth in offensive field goal percentage (.361). Hope is the MIAA leader in scoring average (77.1 ppg) and is ranked third in defensive scoring average (56.1 ppg). Hope is ranked second in the MIAA in field goal shooting (.419) and is ranked fifth in defensive field goal percentage (.373).

Conference Stat Bytes – In conference games only, Hope is ranked No. 1 in the MIAA in scoring offense (79.6 ppg) and third in defensive scoring average (54.7 ppg). Calvin is ranked third in scoring (62.5 ppg) and second in defensive scoring average (49.7 ppg). Individually, Calvin junior Anna Fernandez is tied for the MIAA scoring lead with Trine's Sydney Wagner at 15.7 ppg. Calvin's Valerie Dirkse is ranked fifth in rebounding average (8.6 rpg). Calvin's Katelyn LaRue is ranked second in three-point field goals made per game (1.9) while Hope's Maddie Petroelje is ranked fourth (1.7) and Fernandez fifth (1.6). Calvin's Chloe Wiegers is ranked sixth in assists-per-game (3.4 apg) and No. 1 in the MIAA in assist-to-turnover ration (2.0). Calvin's Hannah Sall is ranked second in the MIAA in blocks-per-game (2.4) while Dirkse is third (1.4). Fernandez leads the MIAA in steals-per-game (2.6) while Hope's Leah Richards is fifth (2.1).

Block Party – Calvin leads Division III in blocked shots per game, swatting away 7.1 opponent shots per contest. Sophomore Hannah Sall leads Calvin individually, averaging 2.43 per-game which ranks 14th nationally. In a 77-46 win over Lakeland on December 19, Calvin established a new team single-game record for blocked shots with 18. The total also ranks as a Division III single-game high during the 2024-25 season.

Legacy Knights – Calvin senior Valerie Dirkse is a legacy Calvin women's basketball player as her mother Pat (Poel) Dirkse was a four-year member of the Calvin women's basketball team from 1986-1989 and a member of Calvin's 1988 MIAA championship team that finished 21-5 overall and won the MIAA with a 12-0 record, later reaching the NCAA III Tournament. Sophomores Hannah and Lydia Sall are also Calvin basketball legacy Knights although their lineage is through the men's side where their father – Calvin head men's basketball coach Bill Sall – was a two-time All-American from 1986-1990. Hannah and Lydia Sall are triplets with their brother Quinton a sophomore on the Calvin men's basketball team. Junior point guard Sam DeKuiper also has strong Calvin ties. Her grandfather Mike DeKuiper was a strong player for the Calvin men's basketball team between 1969-1973 while her aunt Ronnie DeKuiper was a four-year member of the Calvin women's basketball team from 1988-1992.

Standing Tall with Sall – Sophomore Hannah Sall has upped her scoring and rebounding output over the last two games, averaging 15.0 points and 4.5 rebounds over her last two contests while connecting on 13 of 21 (.619) of her field goal attempts.

Against Ranked Opponents – Calvin is 0-4 this year against nationally-ranked opponents, falling to (then) No. 13 UW-Stout 73-41 on November 8, 79-60 (to then) #9 Trine on November 15, 46-43 to (then) No. 8 UW-Whitewater on December 30 and 62-59 to No. 13 Trine on January 29.

Close Shaves – Calvin has been in four games decided by six points or less this year and gone 2-2 in those games. Calvin defeated Loras 54-51 on November 16, defeated Alma 54-50 on December 11, fell to UW-Whitewater 46-43 and then fell 62-59 to Trine January 29..

Calvin Coach - Mark Christner is in his sixth year as the head coach of the Calvin University women's basketball program. In six years as head women's basketball coach at Calvin, Christner has fashioned a won-loss record of 91-46. A 1999 Calvin graduate, Christner played three years of basketball with the Calvin men's basketball program and later served as an assistant coach with both the men's and women's programs. He went on to a 10-year stint as the head men's basketball coach at Waynesburg University (Pa.) before returning to his alma mater in the spring of 2019. He led Calvin to a 17-10 overall record a year ago which included a fourth place finish and a berth in the MIAA Tournament semifinals. In the 2020-21 season, the Knights went 5-6 overall and again reached the MIAA Tournament semifinals. Last year, the Knights went 19-8 overall and 11-5 in the MIAA, reaching the MIAA Tournament semifinals for the third straight season. Last year he led the Knights to an overall record of 21-6 which included a third place finish in the MIAA and a narrow miss for an at-large bid for the NCAA III Tournament. A year ago he led Calvin to a second place finish in the MIAA and an overall record of 18-8 with the Knights reaching the MIAA Tournament semifinals. His wife Sara (Plasman) Christner played one year with the Calvin women's basketball program and four years with the Calvin women's softball program.

Hope Coach - Hope is led by veteran head coach Brian Morehouse who is in his 28th year at the helm of the Flying Dutch program. He has an all-time won-loss record of 727-101 which includes Division III National Titles in 2006 and 2022.
