AURORA, Il. – The Calvin men's track and field team had a record-breaking afternoon at the Aurora University Grand Prix on Saturday. Senior
Koby VanderWoude (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia HS) highlighted the day by taking seventh in the 200 meters with a school-record time of 22.36, breaking his own previous record of 22.42 set last season. His 200 meter time ranks fourth in the MIAA this season. VanderWoude also placed fourth in the 400 meters on Saturday in a time of 49.69. Freshman
Benjamin Habers (Lake Ann, Mich. Traverse City West) was 13th in 22.68 which ranks second on the Calvin all-time Top 10 indoor list and currently ranks sixth in the MIAA.Â
In the 60 meter hurdles, Calvin went 2-4 with freshman
Rhys Bedford (Delton, MIch. Delton Kellogg) taking second (8.80) and sophomore
Zach Van Baren (Hudsonville, Mich./Covenant Christian HS) placing fourth (8.84). Bedford also placing eighth in the long jump with a mark of 20-1 ½ which ranks eighth on the MIAA indoor list.
In the 3,000 meters, graduate student
Eric Swinson (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern HS) had a career-best time of 8:43.07 that was good for fifth place and ranks fifth in the MIAA. Freshman
Vaughn Meyer (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) was 10
th in a strong time of 8:51.99 which ranks ninth in the MIAA this season.
In the mile run, senior
Nick Henz (Oswego, Il./Oswego East HS) was 11
th in 4:28.67 while senior
Caleb Schillinger (North Liberty, Iowa Liberty) was 12
th in 4:30.27. Henz ranks sixth on the MIAA indoor list while Schillinger ranks eighth.
Calvin closed the meet with a third place finish in the 4x400 meter relay as the Calvin team of sophomore
Mason Schimmel (Grand Rapids, Mich./Covenant Christian HS), freshman
Benjamin Habers (Lake Ann, Mich. Traverse City West), graduate student
Corbin DeBoer (Hudsonville, Mich./Covenant Christian HS) and junior
Connor Lubberts (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS) clocked in with a time of 3:21.98 that leads the MIAA and ranks third on the Calvin all-time indoor performance list.
In the high jump, freshman
Simon Vandenbroek (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was second with a height of 6-4 with freshman
Peyton Coffey (Greenwood, Ind. Center Grove) fifth (6-0 1/2).Â
COACHES COMMENT: "Great day for the team today in Chicago!" said Calvin head track and field coach
Adam Haldorson "We had school records and several top 10 (Calvin) individual performance marks which was exciting to see. This was our only chance to race on a banked track this season and we made the most of that opportunity today."
