ADA, OH – A late three-goal outburst allowed Ohio Northern to pull away for a 5-1 victory over the visiting Calvin Knights Saturday evening.
Calvin pulled within a goal at 2-1 in the 59
th minute of play on
Jacob Goodling's third goal of the season. Goodling (Charlotte, NC/Covenant Day School) scored on a feed from senior teammate
Alex White (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest Academy).
The Polar Bears (3-1-0) scored three times in a span of 10 minutes late in the second half however to seal the win.
Ohio Northern struck first, scoring in the 14
th minute of play on a run through the right wing. The Polar Bears made it a 2-0 lead in the 37
th minute of play and made that lead hold up into halftime.
Calvin got back on the front foot early in the second half and gained a life-line on the goal by Goodling but could not come up with the equalizer before Ohio Northern broke through late.
Ohio Northern held a 10-2 shots at goal advantage. Calvin senior goalkeeper Kalen Matascastillo (New Kensington, Pa./Minnesota Virtual Academy) recorded five saves in goal for the Knights.
COACHES COMMENT: "We're going to have to learn from this," said Calvin head men's soccer coach,
Ryan Souders. "It really stings right now; for sure. But we have to look in the mirror, take personal ownership and grow together as a result of it. I love this group. We'll fight to get it right."
NEXT UP: Calvin travels to Salem, Oregon, next weekend where it will face Pacific Lutheran and host Willamette on back to back nights.
