SALEM, Ore. - Today the Calvin University men's soccer team traveled to the west coast to take on Pacific Lutheran where the Knights ultimately fell 2-1.
Â
The first half was quiet for both teams as they both defenses held strong and the score remained deadlocked. With just one minute left in the half, the Knights goalkeeper Kaelen Matascastillo (New Kensington, Pa./Minnesota Virtual Academy) collected the ball and sent a long punt to Colin Nieuwenhuis (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) on the left wing. Nieuwenhuis won the foot race against the Pacific Lutheran defender as he carried the ball to the baseline and sent in a cross. The low driving ball went into the six-yard box where it was deflected off a defender and resulted in an own goal by Pacific Lutheran to give Calvin the lead.
Â
However, Pacific Lutheran found its footing as they quickly retaliated just seconds into the second half. Three minutes later, they once again found the back of the net to take the 2-1 lead over the Knights.
Â
For the rest of the match Calvin continued to create chances in their offensive end but struggled to finish. The Knights best scoring opportunity came in the 89th minute when sophomore Atsoma Agbu (Tomball, Tx./Klein Cain) found the ball at his feet inside the eighteen-yard box. After getting around a Pacific Lutheran defender he took a shot at goal that sailed just over the net as time expired on the clock and the Knights took the 2-1 defeat.
Â
Calvin recorded 20 shots compared to Pacific Lutherans 21 as Matascastillo recorded seven saves during the match.

COACHES COMMENTS: "Obviously a tough night for us," said head coach Ryan Souders. "On one hand, there were some really positive things. When we commit to it we can be really good but we turned it off in a few key moments and it cost us. Thankfully, we get another shot tomorrow. Have to rest up to take on a really talented Willamette side tomorrow."
Â
UP NEXT: The Knights will be back in action tomorrow as they close out their trip to the west coast against Williamette at 5 PM (PT).
