Calvin Football Prepares for Historic First MIAA Game in Nighttime Matchup at Kalamazoo


Calvin is under the direction of head coach Trent Figg who guides his 110-member roster into year one this fall. 

Tickets - The game will be played at Kalamazoo's Angell Field. Tickets to game can only be purchased in person at Angell Field (1200 Academy St., Kalamazoo, MI 49006) with ticket gates set to open two hours prior to kickoff.

The Lead-Up – Calvin is in its first season of intercollegiate football. The Knights are playing in their MIAA opener this evening. Calvin owns lopsided wins over Oberlin (50-6) and Anderson (66-12) and has a 34-24 loss to Concordia (Wis.) in between. Kalamazoo is off to a 3-0 start for the third straight year. The Hornets own victories over Austin (26-20), Kenyon (28-7) and Manchester (55-0).  Kalamazoo is bidding to open the year 4-0 for the first time since 2018 when it won its first seven games and finished 7-3 overall. Tonight is the first night game at Kalamazoo's Angell Field since September 17, 1960. The Hornets did play night football in 2011 but it was at Waldo Stadium across the street at Western Michigan University during the renovation of Angell Field.

The Calvin Coach-Head coach Trent Figg was hired on January 6, 2023. He is a native of Chillicothe, Missouri, located an hour-and-a-half from Kansas City. He is a 2008 graduate of William Jewell College where he was a four-year member of the football program as a special teams ace and defensive back. He later earned his master's degree from Northwest Missouri State in 2013. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at (then NAIA) William Jewell and later had stints as the special teams coordinator and defensive coordinator at D2 Southern Arkansas, defensive coordinator at William Jewell and special teams coordinator at Missouri State. He later spent two years (2019-21) at the University of Hawaii, serving as chief of staff of the football program and later associate head coach. In 2022, he served as the lead offensive analyst for the University of Oregon football program under head coach Dan Lanning. Figg and Lanning are former teammates and roommates at William Jewell College and stood up for each other at their respective weddings.

MIAA Non-Conference Slate – Combined, the MIAA was 18-6 in non-conference football action over the first three weeks of the season with Hope, Adrian and Kalamazoo all posting 3-0 marks while Calvin, Albion, Alma and Trine were 2-1 and Olivet 1-2.

A Look at the Kalamazoo Coach – Kalamazoo head coach Jamie Zorbo is the dean of MIAA football coaches as he is in his 17th year as head coach of the Hornet football program. He also recently added head athletic director duties to his mantle this past June. Zorbo is 54-101 at the helm of the Hornet football program and has Kalamazoo off to a 3-0 start for the third straight year. Zorbo is a 2000 graduate of Kalamazoo College where he was a four-year letterwinner on the football team including a Second Team All-MIAA selection as a defensive end as a senior in 1999. He is originally a graduate of Battle Creek Lakeview High School.

More on Kalamazoo  - Kalamazoo is off to a hot start under fifth-year senior starting quarterback Josh Nichols. The 6-3, 195 pound senior has six touchdown passes this year without an interception. He has connected on 58.76% (57 of 97) of his pass attempts for 644 yards, averaging 214.4 passing yards per contest. Dawson Skupin has seen time as the primary backup and is 9 of 13 for 99 yards and a touchdown. Junior Lucas Hanifan has been the primary passing target, hauling in 19 grabs for 211 yards and three touchdowns. Jonah Spates is next with 13 catches, 198 yards a touchdown grab. Sheldon Riley leads the Hornet ground game with 177 yards on 45 attempts with three rushing touchdowns. He averages 3.9 yards per rush. On the defensive end, Kalamazoo has picked off four passes and returned two for touchdowns – one by Adam Stapleton and one by Omarion Hall. Corey Garrison is the leading tackler for Kalamazoo with 22 tackles – 10 solo and 12 assisted.

Statistical Matchup – Calvin is ranked 68th nationally in Division III in passing offense (245.3 ypg) and 39th nationally in rushing offense (197.7 ypg). Kalamazoo is ranked 64th in passing offense (250.0 ypg) and 178th in running offense (92.0 ypg). Calvin has forced 10 opponent turnovers (six interceptions and four fumble recovers) through three games while losing four (two interceptions, two fumbles) itself. Kalamazoo has gained nine turnovers defensively (five interceptions and four fumble recoveries) and committed just one of its own – a fumble. The Hornets have not thrown an interception in 111 passing attempts. Defensively, Calvin is allowing 17.3 points a game, 92.7 yards per game rushing and 147.67 yards per game passing. Kalamazoo is allowing 160.3 yards per game through the air and 76.0 yards per game on the ground while giving up just 9.0 points a game on the scoreboard.

Calvin Ground Game / Calvin Passing Game – Calvin's run game is led by graduate student running back Jaier Harden who transferred to Calvin from Division II Davenport University. Harden has 298 yards rushing with two touchdown through three games for an average of 99.33 yards per game. Calvin's passing game is paced by graduate student Chase Bradman – a transfer from Indiana Wesleyan University. Bradman is 58 of 98 passing with 653 yards, eight touchdowns and two interceptions. Freshmen Luke Michmerhuizen and Hunter Hogan pace the Calvin receiving group. Michmerhuizen has 17 catches and Hogan 15 catches. Michmerhuizen has a team-high 219 receiving yards to go with two touchdowns with Hogan next with 186 yards and four receiving touchdowns. 

More on Calvin – Calvin features one of the youngest rosters in America this fall as the Knights feature 88 freshmen (54 true freshman, 34 red-shirt freshmen) as part of their 112-man roster. 10 players feature from other states including Texas (three), Ohio (two), California (one), Georgia (one), Illinois (one), Minnesota (one) and New York (one) with the remaining 102 coming from Michigan.

MIAA Preseason Poll – Calvin was picked to finish eighth out of eight teams in the 2024 MIAA preseason poll with defending league champion Alma selected as the MIAA's pre-season favorite. Kalamazoo was picked to finish seventh. 

Week Three Recap – Calvin rolled to a 66-12 victory at Anderson University last Saturday afternoon behind 475 yards of total offense including a season-high 225 yards on the ground. All four Calvin quarterbacks got into the game. Starter Chase Bradman was 13 of 21 for 175 yards and three touchdowns. Freshman Drake Irwin was 5 of 6 passing for a touchdown and ran one in for a score from one yard out. Freshman Hayden Slegers was 2 of 2 passing for 7 yards while redshirt freshman Luca Prior was 1 of 1 for 12 yards. Jaier Harden broke loose for 111 yards on the ground on nine carries while scoring a pair of rushing touchdowns. Freshman Hunter Hogan had 3 catches for 81 yards and a score. Luke Michmerhuizen had four catches for 43 yards and a score while freshman Baxter McCoy had three catches for 39 yards and a score. Freshman Sal Ruffino was 1 of 2 kicking on field goal attempts, connecting on a 28-yard boot. He also connected on nine extra-point attempts. Defensively junior Jair Nowlin had nine tackles with one interception. Senior Paul VanderPloeg collected seven tackles and broke up one pass.

Special Teams Unit – Calvin's special teams play has been strong early on. Freshman placekicker Sal Ruffino is 6 of 9 on field goals with a long of 41 yards. He has also connected on all 16 of his point-after tries. Freshman punter Logan Nap averages 38.25 yards per punt and has placed two kicks inside the 20-yard line. His kick down to the one-yard line in Calvin's season opener against Oberlin set up a subsequent two-point safety by the Knight defense – the first points in Calvin football history. 

National Honors – Calvin freshman Dylan DeHoop was named to the D3football.com National Team of the Week on Sept. 10 for his play in Calvin's opener. DeHoop picked up a pair of Oberlin passes including one in the end zone while making four solo tackles.  

Starting Signal Caller – Calvin graduate student Chase Bradman has started Calvin's opening two games. A local product out of South Christian High School, Bradman arrived at Calvin in time for the 2024 spring semester after graduating from Indiana Wesleyan University in December. Bradman was a four-year member of the highly successful NAIA Indiana Wesleyan program. At Indiana Wesleyan, Bradman appeared in 17 games, completing 11 of 15 passing attempts for 136 yards and one touchdown. He also ran for 30 yards as a senior in 2023 with one rushing touchdown. He helped Indiana Wesleyan reach the quarterfinals of the 2023 NAIA Playoffs. 

Double-Trouble – Red-shirt freshman Hunter Hogan has been a two-way standout for the Knights. On offense, he has 15 catches for 186 yards and four touchdowns and 13 rushing yards on six carries. He also has one punt return and is averaging 81.33 all-purpose yards per game. On defense, Hogan has 10 tackles, one for a loss and two interceptions. Hogan has scored at least one touchdown in each of Calvin's opening three games.

Cousin Connection – Freshman quarterback Drake Irwin and freshman wide receiver Jude Klunder are first cousins. 

Twin Sighting – Calvin Features a set of twins in Josh and Danny Hitchcock who are both freshmen offensive lineman out of Gobles High School. 

Whitehall Claims First Dibs – The first recruit to commit to the Calvin University football program was redshirt freshman Winton Napier who is slated to start at left tackle. Napier is one of three graduates of Whitehall High School on the Calvin roster joined by redshirt freshman running back Trenton TenBrock and redshirt freshman running back Jackson Cook. 

Serving Our Country – Calvin freshman offensive lineman Adam Kiel out of Hopkins High School is currently a member of the Michigan National Guard.

High Schools Represented – The high schools with the most represented players are: Rockford High School (7), Hudsonville Unity Christian (7), Holland Christian (6), South Christian (6) and Jenison High School (4).

A Look Ahead – The Knights return home next weekend to host two-time defending MIAA champion Alma at 1 p.m. in front of a Calvin Homecoming crowd at Eagles Stadium.
