GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin University women's tennis team finished a strong week of play with a 6-3 win over Saint Mary's College (Ind.) on Saturday at Strikwerda Tennis Center.
Calvin (13-1, 3-0 MIAA) started strong with wins in two of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 overall lead.
The number-two doubles team of
Catherine Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) and
Rachel Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) won 8-6, while the number-three team of
Tessa Holman (Washington, Mich./Romeo) and
Elise Norman (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview) won 8-3. Saint Mary's (12-5, 2-1 MIAA) won the number-one doubles match 8-7 thanks to an 11-9 tiebreaker.
In singles play, the Knights won four of the six points.
Catherine Grissom (6-3, 6-3),
Maggie Shoemaker (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) (6-0, 6-1),
Averi Lewis (Tualatin, Ore./Tualatin) (6-1, 6-0) and
Delanie Minnema (East Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe) (6-0, 6-0) each won in straight sets to secure the four points.
The Belles scored wins in both the numbers-one and two matches to score their two points.

Catherine Grissom kept up her strong play in singles to lead us in singles play. Another big week coming up with Olivet and Hope next week."
