GAME 1
CALVIN 9, ANDERSON 0
Â
In the first game of the day the Knights jumped out to a quick lead in the bottom of the first inning when
Carly Dole (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant) hammered a two-run homerun over the right field fence to score
Grace Glass (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) and give Calvin the 2-0 lead.
Â
The Knights kept the momentum rolling in the second inning when
Kennedi Pepin (Bourbonnais, Ill./Bradley Bourbonnais) forced a walk to give Calvin a baserunner. Next up,
Sage Mougin (New Carlisle, Ind./New Prairie) beat out a bunt to move Pepin into scoring position. Two batters later freshman
Aubrey Herder (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian) punched the ball through the infield to score the run and extend the Calvin lead.
Â
Calvin tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning thanks to RBIs from
Lily Gaastra (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and Herder to make the score 5-0. In the bottom of the fifth inning,
Taylor Sanborn (Midland, Mich./Midland) kicked things off with a single up the middle before
Emilie Gist (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) followed it up with a single of her own. Next,
Tory Decker (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) stepped into the batter's box and delivered a single through the left side to score pinch runner
Emily Sweetland (Ann Arbor, Mich./Saline) and boost the Calvin lead. The Knights rounded out their scoring that inning when
Alanna Garcia (Holt, Mich./Holt) sent a long fly ball to left field to score pinch runner
Mya Brickley (Battle Creek, Mich./Delton Kellogg) and make the score 7-0.
Â
In the bottom of the sixth inning the Knight continued to put pressure on the Raven defense when
Ella Steele (San Jose, Calif./Valley Christian) and
Emma Springer (Three Oaks, Mich./River Valley) hit back-to-back singles to kick things off. Two batters later, Gist called game with a two run double to give Calvin the 9-0 victory after just six innings.
Â
In the circle, sophomore
Brooke Hunderman (Grand Rapids, Mich./Calvin Christian) continued to show her dominance as she recorded twelve strikes while only giving up one hit.
Â
GAME 2
CALVIN 2, ANDERSON 1
Â
In the second game of the day the first scoring opportunity came for the Knights when Herder doubled down the left field line to start the bottom of the third inning. On the next play, Dole hit her seventeenth triple of the season to score Herder before Sanborn followed with a single to bring in Dole and give Calvin the 2-0 lead.
Â
Offensively, things were quite for both teams after that as junior
Zoe Hazelhoff (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian) dominated in the circle. She recorded three strikeouts while her defense made some spectacular plays as she stayed perfect through six innings. In the top of the seventh, the Ravens picked up their first hit of the game before pushing one run across the plate and cutting the Calvin lead down to one. With Anderson threatening,
Emma Ludema (Martin, Mich./Wayland) entered the game with bases loaded and recorded the final out to get the save while Hazelhoff was credited with the 2-1 win.
Â
COACHES COMMENTS: "Really impressed with Anderson's fight as they had some travel issues and we had to push things back," said head coach
Becky Hilgert. "They played really well and didn't let the long day impact him. Brooke was efficient in game one and we were able to finally support her with some big runs. In game two, Zoe was also efficient and our defense made plays behind her. Emma came in relief in a tough situation and closed the door which is just like we practice. Really great staff day by her pitchers. Overall, two good team wins."
Â
UP NEXT: The Knights will be back in action on Saturday, April 27th when they resume MIAA conference play against the Belles of Saint Mary's. Game one is set to begin at 1:00 PM while game two will start around 3:00 PM.
