ALMA, Mich. – The Calvin University baseball team could not contain the offense from Alma College on Tuesday in a 12-2 defeat in seven innings.
Alma (20-12, 10-4 MIAA) jumped in front early and scored at least one run in five of its six times at the plate.
Calvin (15-18, 6-9 MIAA) looked to use the bullpen in the midweek conference tilt to try to keep the Scots' offense off balance, but seven pitchers for the Knights combined to allow 12 hits while walking three and hitting seven Alma batters.
Trailing 2-0 after the first inning,
Aidan Jaworowski (Zeeland, Mich./Zeeland East) put the Knights on the board with an RBI-groundout in the second, the Scots came back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to built a 5-1 lead.
After a scoreless third, Alma started to distance itself with one run in the fourth, and then added four more in the fifth before the final two runs in the sixth.
Ryan Brown (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia) drove in the second Calvin run in the seventh inning on an RBI-double, but the Knights could not drive him in from second base to extend the game.
Ian Schuster (Howell, Mich./Hartland) started the game and fell to 2-2 on the season after allowing two runs on three hits in one inning.
