Calvin Baseball Tops Albion 4-3 to Open Series

ALBION, Mich. – The Calvin University baseball team won at Albion 4-3 on Thursday to open its three-game series against the Britons.

Albion (14-19, 6-10 MIAA) looked strong early, scoring a pair of runs off Calvin (16-18, 7-9 MIAA) starting pitcher Nolan Coil (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) in the bottom of the first inning, but the Knights roared back with three runs of their own in the top of the second inning.

Will Mueller (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) put the Knights on the board with an RBI fielder's choice to open the scoring, and Aidan Jaworowski (Zeeland, Mich./Zeeland East) put the Knights in front with a two-run double that scored Josh Winkle (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and Mueller to take a 3-2 lead.

That lead would be short-lived, as the Britons scored one run off an error in the second inning to tie the game at 3-3, but Coil stranded the bases loaded to end the third inning, and then retired 12 of the next 15 hitters to keep the Britons at three runs.

During that dominant stretch from Coil, Winkle scored Caden Penn (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North) on an RBI-single in the sixth inning to give the Knights a one-run edge heading into the final innings.

Matt Reynolds (Hopkins, Mich./Hopkins) relieved Coil in the eighth inning and loaded the bases on one hit and two walks, but worked his way out of the jam with a groundout to Patrick Gillen (Jensen Beach, Fla./Jensen Beach).

Ian Doyle (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grandville) entered for the ninth inning to protect the one-run lead and worked his way around a one-out walk to record the final two outs for his second save of the season.

Coil (4-2) pitched 7.0 strong innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on six hits while striking out six to earn the win.

At the plate, Winkle and Jaworowski each finished with two hits apiece, while Penn scored two runs.

NEXT UP: Calvin baseball returns to action tomorrow (Friday, April 26) when it hosts Albion for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
