KALAMAZOO, Mich.- Today the Calvin women's tennis team traveled to Kalamazoo for an MIAA showdown against the Hornets.
The Knights started off slow as junior Catherine Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) and freshman Rachel Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) picked up Calvin's only win in doubles with a score of 8-2.
The Hornets won one and two singles to extend their lead despite freshman Marina Ribeiro (Santos, São Paulo, Brazil) pushing the two singles match into three sets (1-6, 6-1, 6-3). However, looking to propel the Knights back into contention Catherine Grissom (6-2, 6-2) and junior Maggie Shoemaker (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) (6-3, 6-1) each won in straight sets to tie things up at 3-3.Â
Junior Averi Lewis (Tualatin, Ore./Tualatin) evened things up at 4-4 when she won her match in two sets (6-2, 6-2). With just one singles match left, junior Delanie Minnema (East Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe) came in clutch for the Knights when she defeated her opponent with a score of 6-0 in both sets and gave Calvin the 5-4 victory.
This victory also marked head coach John Ross' overall 600th win as a Calvin coach with 46 wins in women's tennis, 255 wins in men's tennis and 299 wins in women's basketball.Â
