Calvin Women's Lacrosse Is Victorious On Senior Day

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Today the Calvin women's lacrosse team welcomed the Brits of Albion to Zuidema Field where they were able to pick up a 15-6 victory in celebration of senior day.

After today's match up Calvin improves to a 4-9 overall record while moving to 1-2 in MIAA play. Albion fell to an overall record of 4-7 and a MIAA record of 1-2.

Calvin got out to a hot start after just two minutes of play when Ainsley Gothard (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) found the back of the net off an assist from Morgan Bethard (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt). Meghan Chang (Clarksburg, Md./Clarksburg) then took advantage of a man-up opportunity as she scored to make the score 2-0 just four minutes into the game.

Albion picked up a goal of their own before Bethard and Kelly Ruha (New Hope, Minn./Robbinsville Armstrong) each added a goal to the Knights total to extend the lead. The Brits were able to break through the Calvin defense for another goal in the first period but two goals from freshman Alex Petrusha (Milford, Mich./Milford) sent the Knights into the second quarter with a 6-2 lead.

The second quarter was quiet as both teams struggled to find scoring opportunities with the only goal coming from Ruha to give Calvin the 7-2 lead at the half.

In the third quarter Calvin outscored the Brits 3-1 with all three goals for the Knights coming from sophomore Jacey Smith (Watertown, Wis./Watertown). The Knights continued their dominance into the fourth quarter with a goal from Ruha, two from Petrusha and two from Jessica Eenigenburg. Albion recorded two goals in the fourth quarter but they remained nowhere near the Knights as Calvin walked away with the 15-6 victory.

Calvin outshot Albion 30-24 while also picking up 20 ground balls compared to the Brits 18 ground balls. The Knights also dominated on draw controls by winning 17 while Albion only won 8.

Petrusha finished the night as the leading scorer for Calvin with four goals while Ruha and Smith each had three. Natalie Scott (Dyer, Ind./Illiana Christian) led the team in caused turnovers with three with Smith, Chang and Katie Winkle (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids, Christian) each recording two. Chang had a team high of seven draw controls.

In goal, Margee Boelema (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity) notched 12 saves while also leading the team in ground balls with ten.

COACHES COMMENT: "I'm very proud of our team," said head coach Blake Boehm. "They're starting to click really well. Our defense was strong and aggressive, Margee did really well in goal, clears were efficient and we won the battle at the draw control. Albion scouted us well and caused some problems offensively. We had to adjust how we attacked and as a result new players capitalized on scoring opportunities."

UP NEXT: The Knights will be back in action on Tuesday, April 16th when they welcome the Bulldogs of Adrian for another MIAA match up. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
