Calvin Baseball Two-Hits Penn State Altoona in 10-1 Win

DAVENPORT, Fla. - The Calvin University baseball team put together a strong all around performance in a 10-1 win over Penn State Altoona on Tuesday.

Calvin (3-5) took command early as it sent 10 batters to the plate in a four-run first inning that set the tone for the rest of the game. Patrick Gillen (Jensen Beach, Fla./Jensen Beach), Caden Penn (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North), Ryan Tschirhart (Clinton, Mich./Clinton) and Matt Reynolds (Hopkins, Mich./Hopkins) each had RBI-singles in the inning to lead the offense.

Penn State Altoona (2-4) scored once in the bottom of the first inning after a leadoff single and walk, but Calvin starting pitcher Nolan Coil (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) got out of the early jam and then threw four scoreless innings without allowing another hit while striking out five.

Aidan Jaworowski (Zeeland, Mich./Zeeland East) smacked an RBI-double in the fourth inning to score Noah Etnyre (Northville, Mich./Plymouth Christian) and push the Calvin lead to 5-1, and Tschirhart came on in relief to make that lead stick with three scoreless innings and allowing only one hit against four strikeouts.

The Knights put the game away in the late innings, with Reynolds driving in one run in the eighth on a sacrifice fly, followed by a four-run ninth that featured a Gillen two-run triple and RBI-singles from Penn and Josh Winkle (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) before Kyle Koning (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian) struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth to end the game.

Coil (1-0), Tschirhart and Koning combined to allow just the one run and two hits while striking out 12 in nine innings.

At the plate, Calvin recorded 13 hits, with eight of the nine starters finishing with at least one hit. Gillen had two hits and three RBI. Penn led the team with three hits while driving in two. Jaworowski and Winkle each had two hits.

COACH'S COMMENT: "We got off to a great start at the plate today," Calvin head baseball coach Kevin Van Duyn said. "We had great pitching today from Nolan, Ryan and Kyle, and then it was great to see our offense help us put the game away with some late runs."

NEXT UP: Calvin baseball gets Wednesday (March 6) off before returning to action on Thursday (March 7) against Gordon at 9:00 AM at Northeast Regional Park.
