Calvin Baseball Blasts Way to 13-3 Win Over Gordon

DAVENPORT, Fla. - The Calvin University baseball team continued its strong run in Florida with a 13-3 win in eight innings over Gordon (Mass.) on Thursday.

Calvin (4-5) fell behind 1-0 early, but scored at least one run in four straight innings before putting the game away with a four-run eighth inning on the way to the win.

Starting pitcher Ian Doyle (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grandville) pitched his way in and out of trouble early, stranding one runner in the first with the help of a double play and escaping a bases-loaded jam in the second with only one run allowed.

His strong work early allowed the offense to get going, as Patrick Gillen (Jensen Beach, Fla./Jensen Beach) blasted a two-run home run to right field in the third inning to put the Knights on the scoreboard, and Carter Penn (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North) stole home as part of a double steal in the fourth to give the Knights a 3-1 lead.

Gillen added an RBI-double in the fifth, but Gordon (1-6) answered with one run in the fifth off Doyle to keep its deficit at three (5-2).

Ryan Schummer (West Lafayette, Ind./Central Catholic) helped the Knights blow the game open in the sixth inning with a two-run home run to right field, and Caden Penn (Macomb, Mich./Lutheran North) finished the five-run inning with a two-run single that scored Ryan Brown (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia) and Will Mueller (Aurora, Ill./Metea Valley) to extend the Calvin lead to 9-2.

In the eighth, the Knight took advantage of a pair of errors by the Scots on the way to four more runs. Ryan Tschirhart (Clinton, Mich./Clinton) started the scoring with a bunt single with the bases loaded, and Schummer finished with it with another two-run single to close out the win.

Doyle (1-2) earned his first win of the season by allowing three runs on six hits while striking out six in 5.1 innings. Matt Reynolds (Hopkins, Mich./Hopkins) and Connor Comiskey (Shelby Township, Mich./Lutheran North) closed out the game with 2.2 innings of scoreless work in relief.

Schummer finished the day 2-5 at the plate with four RBI, while Gillen went 3-4 with three RBI. His home run was his fifth of the season and the 11th of his career, tying him for fifth place on the Calvin career home run leader board.

The win moved Calvin to 4-2 on its spring break trip in Florida.

NEXT UP: Calvin baseball returns to action tomorrow (Friday, March 8) when it plays Concordia Chicago in a game scheduled to start at 12:00 PM in Auburndale, Florida.
