Calvin Men's Volleyball Wins Five Set Thriller Against Adrian

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Tonight the Calvin men's volleyball team outlasted the Bulldogs of Adrian in a five set thriller with scores of 20-25, 25-26, 25-23, 14-25 and 15-13.

After dropping the first set the Knights came storming back and won the next two sets. Led by junior Gabriel Laughlin (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Michigan Aviation Academy) on the attack and freshman Nick Bultje (Byron Center, Mich./South Christian) on the defense, Calvin looked strong heading into the fourth set.

However, the Bulldogs weren't down easy as they won the fourth set and pushed the match into the fifth. Just like the rest of the match, the fifth set was a back and forth affair as the teams traded points. Adrian began to gain momentum late in the set when they went up 13-11 but a clutch kill from Bultje gave the Knights the confidence boost they needed to get back on track. From that point out Calvin held strong before junior Arie Padmos (Martinez, Calif./Contra Costa Christian) had a service ace for the final point of the match to give the Knights the 3-2 win.

As a team Calvin hit .182 percent with their best performance coming in the second set where they hit .368 percent.

Bultje ended his night with 14 kills, six block assists and two solo blocks while Lauglhin had 14 kills and five block assists. Freshman Brady Gudauskas (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) and Padmos each finished with eight kills and sophomore Parker Steele (Boscobel, Wis./Boscobel) led the team with 10 digs. Freshman setter Cameron Dogger (Holland, Mich./Zion Christian) finished with 38 assists.

COACHES COMMENT: "Great team win," said head coach Spencer Fredrick. "Arie came in clutch in a huge way from the service line and Nick was phenomenal attacking."

UP NEXT: The Knights will be back in action tomorrow when they take on the Comets of Olivet at Van Noord Arena at 1 p.m.
