Calvin Men's Volleyball Takes Down Olivet To Close Out Holiday Weekend

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich - Today the Calvin men's volleyball team finished off their holiday weekend strong by defeating Olivet in four sets with scores of 23-25, 25-18, 25-19 and 15-24.

The Knights move to 6-17 overall and 3-4 in MCVL play while Olivet falls to 5-23 overall and 0-7 in conference play.

After dropping the first set the Knights came back strong with the attack led by junior Arie Padmos (Martinez, Calif./Contra Costa Christian) and freshman Brady Gudauskas (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley) who scored relentlessly against the Comets.

The Knights won the next three sets to pick up their second victory of the weekend. Calvin hit .193 percent in the match with their best performance coming in the fourth set when they hit an impressive .355 percent.

Padmos finished with a team high 13 kills and a .500 hitting percentage while also picking up seven digs. Gudauskas finished with nine kills while Gabriel Laughlin (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Michigan Aviation Academy) had seven kills and eight blocks. Freshman Nick Bultje (Byron Center, Mich./South Christian) made several stands on defense where he recorded a career high of 13 blocks during the match and chipped in six kills.

Senior Ethan Wilstermann (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) got on the scoring sheet with four kills while fellow senior Issac Van Essen (Orland Park, Ill./Chicago Christian) entered the game in the fourth set where he provided some key serves for Calvin.

Sophomore libero Parker Steele (Boscobel, Wis./Boscal) finished the match with 15 digs while freshman setter Cameron Dogger (Holland, Mich./Zion Christian) had 15 digs and 31 assists.

COACHES COMMENT: "I am super happy for the guys and I think they played their butts off today," said head coach Spencer Fredrick. "We started a little sluggish in the first set but we challenged them to give it their all for the rest of the way and they did just that. It shows in the digging and the hustle plays that don't show up in the stats but I see it on the court and it's something that we love. Next week is going to be a battle as we head down to play two good teams but right now we're just happy to be able to pick up the win in our last home game and to be able to make it a special day for our seniors."

UP NEXT: The Knights will be back in action on Friday, April 5th when they travel to Cincinnati, Ohio to take on Mount St. Joseph. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
