ELGIN, Ill. - The Calvin University men's volleyball team scored its third win of the season as part of a doubleheader to open a tournament hosted by Judson University on Friday.
The Knights opened the day with a 3-0 defeat to Indiana Tech (25-20, 25-14, 25-10), but came back with a 3-0 win over Midway (Ky.) (25-22, 25-12, 25-17).

The Knights opened the day with a tough 3-0 defeat against the 11th-ranked NAIA team in the nation in Indiana Tech.Â
The Warriors and showed their quality throughout the match against the young Knights, hitting .509 on the attack with 33 kills against only six errors.Â
The Knights battled for much of the first set to keep things close, but the Warriors came on strong to take the final two sets and secure the win.
Gabriel Laughlin (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Michigan Aviation Academy) led Calvin with six kills.
Cameron Dogger (Holland, Mich./Zion Christian) finished with 15 assists.
Calvin (3-8) 3, Midway (2-7) 0
After the tough early match against Indiana Tech, Calvin finished Friday on a high note with a 3-0 sweep of Midway.
The two teams were even to start the match, but the Knights finished strong and took the opening set 25-22 on a block from Laughlin and
Sven Grimbergen (Bend, Ore./Cascades Academy).
Calvin would cruise the rest of the way as it scored 17 of the last 21 points of set two to take a 2-0 overall lead, and then closed the match with a service ace from
Jonathan Pheifer (Lakewood, Calif./Valley Christian) to finish off the three-set sweep.
The two matches allowed the Knights to play a number of different players in various roles, with Pheifer leading the team with six kills against Midway. Dogger added 19 assists and six digs in the win, while
Andrew Pigatti (Crown Point, Ind./Illiana Christian) led the team with seven digs.Â

Spencer Fredrick said. "Everyone played well the whole day, especially Cam (Dogger) and Gabe (Laughlin). We were able to get our serves going, which led to a more desireable outcome in the second match against Midway."Â
NEXT UP: Calvin men's volleyball returns to action tomorrow (Saturday, February 24) at the Eagle Classic hosted by Judson University. The Knights face Judson at 10:00 AM (CST), followed by a match against Roosevelt at 3:00 PM (CST).
