Calvin Men's Volleyball Concludes Competition at Judson Tournament

ELGIN, Il. – The Calvin men's volleyball team concluded its competition at the Judson Tournament on Saturday.

Calvin opened Saturday with a 25-9, 25-19, 25-10 loss to host Judson.

Arie Padmos led Calvin in kills with four while Jonathan Pheifer and Gabriel Laughlin had three kills apiece.

Sven Grimbergen had a pair of blocks. Cameron Dogger tallied nine assists. Padmos, Parker Steele and Dogger had three digs apiece.

Calvin then fought but fell in three tight sets to Midway by scores of 25-23, 25-22, 25-21.

In set one, Calvin held a 23-22 lead but Midway scored the final three points. In set two, Calvin led 21-20 but could dropped five of the final six points to lose 25-22. In set three, Roosevelt rolled out to a 17-10 lead but Calvin fought back to close within 20-18. The Knights got no closer than two points the rest of the way as Roosevelt finished off set three 25-21 for the match win.

Sven Grimbergen had eight kills with Brady Gudauskas contributing seven kills and Laughlin five kills.

Laughlin and Steele had two aces apiece.

Dogger had 28 assists. Steele had 14 digs and Padmos eight digs. Steele was later named to the all-tournament team while Dogger was an honorable mention all-tournament selection.

COACHES COMMENT: "Overall a great weekend," said Calvin head men's volleyball coach Spencer Fredrick. "Really proud of our guys for bouncing back after our performance against Judson. Arie and Parker's leadership on the court really showed today as well."

NEXT UP: Calvin will travel to Trine next Thursday for its conference (MCVL) opener.
