GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin University women's tennis team opened the 2024 schedule with an 8-1 win over Aquinas College on Saturday at the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center.
Calvin (3-0) started the match strong by sweeping all three doubles matches. The number-one team of
Marina Ribeiro (Santos, Sao Paulo, Brazil) and
Julia Hooker (East Grand Rapids, Mich./East Grand Rapids) won 8-5, while the number-two team of
Catherine Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) and
Rachel Grissom (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) won 8-0. The number-three team of
Tessa Holman (Washington, Mich./Romeo) and
Maggie Shoemaker (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) closed the sweep with an 8-1 win.
The Knights followed the doubles sweep with a strong showing in singles.
Catherine Grissom (6-2, 6-0), Shoemaker (6-0, 6-1),
Averi Lewis (Tualatin, Ore./Tualatin) (6-0, 6-1) and
Delanie Minnema (East Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe) (6-2, 6-1) each won their matches in straight sets.
In number-two singles, Holman (3-6, 6-4, 10-8) came back after dropping the first set to win in three.
Aquinas (0-4) scored its lone point in number-one singles, where it won in straight sets.
