ALLENDALE, Mich. – The Calvin men's indoor track and field team had a record-breaking day of competition at the GVSU Holiday Open on Friday.

Senior Koby VanderWoude (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia HS) highlighted the day by setting a new school record in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.09. The time by VanderWoude broke the previous record of 7.17 set by Owen Adeboyejo in 2022. Freshman Max Huizenga (Hudsonville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) was 48th in the race (7.20).

VanderWoude was busy for the Knights on Friday. He made a run at Calvin's school record in the 400 meters, finishing seventh with a time of 48.69. a half-second off the school mark of 48.13. VanderWoude was part of a powerful pack of Calvin runners in the 400 meter dash. Junior Connor Lubberts (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS) was 17th (49.93), sophomore Mason Schimmel (Grand Rapids, Mich./Covenant Christian HS) 30th (50.93) freshman Benjamin Habers (Lake Ann, Mich./Traverse City West HS) 31st (50.88), freshman Kaden Buse (Loogoote, Ind. Barr-Reeve Community Schools) 36th (51.43), junior Ethan Sculley (Byron Center, Mich./South Christian HS) 40th (51.78) and junior Danny Andringa (Pella, Ia./Pella Christian HS) 50th (52.76).

Calvin then formed two strong 4x400 meter relay teams. The quartet of Schimmel, Lubberts, Habers and VanderWoude cruised in with a third place time of 3:20.75 while the relay team of Buse, Andringa, Sculley and sophomore Zach Van Baren (Hudsonville, Mich./Covenant Christian HS) took 12th in 3:27.13.

VanBaren was also busy for the Knights on Friday. He placed 21st in the 60 meter hurdles (8.79) and 29th in the long jump (19-6). Sophomore Connor Johnson (Kingsley, Mich./Kingsley HS) was 23rd in the long jump (19-11.5) with freshman Ryhs Bedford (Delton, Mich./Delton Kellogg HS) 25th (19-9.5). In addition, freshman Josh Ulman (Greenville, Mich./Home School) was 27th (9.23) in the 60 meter hurdles.

In the 200 meter dash, freshman Lincoln Fox (Comstock Park, Mich./Kenowa Hills HS) was 42nd (23.25) and freshman Will Richardson (Stockton, Md. Snow Hill)  59th (24.26).
The highlight of Calvin's field events was the first place finish turned in by freshman Simon Vandenbroek (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the high jump as he cleared the bar at 1.95 meters (6-4.75) to match a personal-best jump. He later took a crack at the Calvin school record of 6-6.75 set by Matt Christians in 2011, just falling short of clearing the bar.

Sophomore Aidan Veltkamp (Lynden, Wash./Lynden Christian HS) was fifth in the triple jump (39-2.25).

In the weight throw, senior Matthew Toldy (Huron, Oh./Huron HS) flexed his muscles in finishing 15th (45-1.5).

COACHES COMMENT: "Great season opener for the portion of the team competing today!" said Calvin head track and field coach Adam Haldorsen. "Lots of personal bests, 21 new all-time top 10 marks, and a school record in the 60m! A few specific performances stand out among the many other top marks of the day. Freshman Simon Vandenbroek won the open high jump competition with a mark of 1.95m (6'4.75"), which was a nearly 2" pr and he had two great attempts at 6'6.75" which would have tied the school record had he cleared it, fantastic way to start his Calvin career! And last but not least Koby VanderWoude broke the 60m school record, ran a new PR in the 400m; 48.69, and anchored the men's 4x400 A team to a third overall finish at a meet with many Div 1 and Div 2 schools. Great way to cap off the first semester! We'll be back in action after Christmas break in Chicago at the Aurora Invite."

NEXT UP: Calvin will now break until January 25 when it competes at the Aurora Invitational in Aurora, Illinois.
