The Lead-Up – Calvin is in its first season of intercollegiate football. The Knights are 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the MIAA after gaining non-conference wins over Oberlin and Anderson and dropping games to Concordia (Wis.) and Kalamazoo. The Kalamazoo loss (33-31) took place last Saturday and served as Calvin's first-ever conference game. Calvin piled up 535 yards of offense but was penalized 19 times for 179 yards. Chase Bradman had a big day, going 40 of 54 in the passing department for 393 yards and four touchdowns.
Seth Ritsema had nine grabs and two touchdown receptions while freshman
Luke Michmerhuizen had nine catches and a touchdown grab. Graduate student
Jaier Harden led the ground game with 68 yards on 19 carries. Alma is also 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the MIAA. Alma owns wins over Denison and Division II Northern Michigan University with its two defeats coming against teams that are currently nationally-ranked. Alma dropped a week one 41-35 decision to current No. 6 UW-River Falls and then fell to current No. 23 Hope 34-13 last week at home. Junior Carter St. John was 16 of 33 passing for 229 yards and two touchdowns in the defeat to Hope for Alma. He was also the leading ground-gainer for the Scots with 34 yards. Devon Frenchko had six catches for 124 yards and one touchdown reception.
The Calvin Coach-Head coach
Trent Figg was hired on January 6, 2023. He is a native of Chillicothe, Missouri, located an hour-and-a-half from Kansas City. He is a 2008 graduate of William Jewell College where he was a four-year member of the football program as a special teams ace and defensive back. He later earned his master's degree from Northwest Missouri State in 2013. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at (then NAIA) William Jewell and later had stints as the special teams coordinator and defensive coordinator at D2 Southern Arkansas, defensive coordinator at William Jewell and special teams coordinator at Missouri State. He later spent two years (2019-21) at the University of Hawaii, serving as chief of staff of the football program and later associate head coach. In 2022, he served as the lead offensive analyst for the University of Oregon football program under head coach Dan Lanning. Figg and Lanning are former teammates and roommates at William Jewell College and stood up for each other at their respective weddings.
MIAA Non-Conference Slate – Combined, the MIAA was 18-6 in non-conference football action over the first three weeks of the season with Hope, Adrian and Kalamazoo all posting 3-0 marks while Calvin, Albion, Alma and Trine were 2-1 and Olivet 1-2.
A Look at the Alma Coach – Alma head coach Jason Couch is in his seventh season at the helm of the Scots football program. He carries a collegiate career won-loss record of 39-22 heading into today's contest. He previously served as co-head coach at Romeo High School. He is a 1997 Alma College graduate and was a three-year starter at center from 1994-1996. He earned All-MIAA honors as a senior in the fall of 1996. He has led Alma to MIAA titles in 2022 and 2023 including NCAA III Playoff berths both seasons. A year ago, he led Alma to the third round of the NCAA III Playoffs before falling 58-41 to eventual national champion Cortland State University of New York.
More on Alma - Alma enters today's game with an overall record of 2-2 and a conference mark of 0-1. The Scots were ranked 16
th by D3football.com prior to last weekend but fell out of the poll after a 34-13 loss to Hope last Saturday in the conference opener for both teams. The Scots are the two-time defending MIAA champions. A year ago, Alma reached the quarterfinals of the NCAA III Playoffs. Alma's two losses this year are to teams currently ranked in the D3football.com Top 25 poll as it fell to current No. 6 UW-River Falls 41-35 on Sept 7 and 34-13 to current No. 23 Hope last Saturday. The Alma offensive attack revolves around junior quarterback Carter St. John – a three-year starter. St John was a D3football.com All-American in 2023 as was current Alma senior wide receiver Devon Frenchko. Frenchko has 10 grabs for 229 yards this fall, ranking second behind team-leader Ty Lotterman who has 22 receptions for 366 yards and four touchdowns. St. John is a dual-threat quarterback. He has 142 yards on the ground on 35 carries and two scores. He is 78 of 133 passing for 1,078 yards and 13 touchdowns. A member of the 2023 All-MIAA Second Team, junior Eddie Williams is the leading ground gainer for the Scots with 233 yards on 58 rushes. Safety Bryce Fredenburg is a key returning piece on defense after earning All-MIAA First Team accolades in 2023. Sophomore linebacker Jett King has a team-high 35 tackles to go with one interception.  The Scots were nationally-ranked through the first three weeks of the season in the D3football.com Top 25 poll but fell out of the poll this week.
Statistical Matchup – Calvin is ranked 31st nationally in Division III in passing offense (282.5 ypg) and 37
th nationally in rushing offense (187.5 ypg). Alma is ranked 43rd in passing offense (270.5 ypg) and 105th in running offense (139.3 ypg). Calvin has forced 10 opponent turnovers (six interceptions and four fumble recovers) through four games while losing six (four interceptions, two fumbles) itself. Alma has gained six turnovers defensively (five interceptions and one fumble recovery) and committed just four itself – all interceptions. Defensively, Calvin is allowing 21.3 points a game, 85.0 yards per game rushing and 185.75 yards per game passing. Alma is allowing 28475 yards per game through the air and 196.8 yards per game on the ground while giving up just 33.0 points a game on the scoreboard.

Jaier Harden who transferred to Calvin from Division II Davenport University. Harden has 369 yards rushing with two touchdowns through four games for an average of 91.50 yards per game. Calvin's passing game is paced by graduate student
Chase Bradman – a transfer from Indiana Wesleyan University. Bradman is 98 of 152 passing with 1,046 yards, 12 touchdowns and four interceptions. Freshmen
Luke Michmerhuizen and
Hunter Hogan pace the Calvin receiving group. Michmerhuizen has 26 catches for 356 yards and three touchdowns while Hogan 21 catches and four touchdowns.
Michmerhuizen is ranked 24th nationally in receiving yards (356).

MIAA Preseason Poll – Calvin was picked to finish eighth out of eight teams in the 2024 MIAA preseason poll with defending league champion Alma selected as the MIAA's pre-season favorite. Kalamazoo was picked to finish seventh.

Sal Ruffino is 7 of 10 on field goals with a long of 41 yards. He has also connected on all 20 of his point-after tries.
He is currently ranked 17th nationally in total points scored (41). Freshman punter
Logan Nap averages 37.70 yards per punt and has placed two kicks inside the 20-yard line. His kick down to the one-yard line in Calvin's season opener against Oberlin set up a subsequent two-point safety by the Knight defense – the first points in Calvin football history.Â
National Honors – Calvin freshman
Dylan DeHoop was named to the D3football.com National Team of the Week on Sept. 10 for his play in Calvin's opener. DeHoop picked up a pair of Oberlin passes including one in the end zone while making four solo tackles.Â
Starting Signal Caller – Calvin graduate student
Chase Bradman has started Calvin's opening two games. A local product out of South Christian High School, Bradman arrived at Calvin in time for the 2024 spring semester after graduating from Indiana Wesleyan University in December. Bradman was a four-year member of the highly successful NAIA Indiana Wesleyan program. At Indiana Wesleyan, Bradman appeared in 17 games, completing 11 of 15 passing attempts for 136 yards and one touchdown. He also ran for 30 yards as a senior in 2023 with one rushing touchdown. He helped Indiana Wesleyan reach the quarterfinals of the 2023 NAIA Playoffs.Â
Receiving Unit – The Calvin starting receiving unit features a strong West Michigan flavor as Ritsema (South Christian), Luke Michmherhuizen (Holland Christian) and
Hunter Hogan (Ravenna) are listed as starters today. Also look for Rockford High School graduates

McCoy Baxter as well as
Kaleb Dubowski to see time. The 6-7 Michmerhuizen is the second member of his immediate family to be a Calvin varsity athlete as his older sister Nicole was a multiple All-American for the Calvin women's track and field team including a national champion in the 10,000 meter run in 2013.Â

Hunter Hogan has been a two-way standout for the Knights. On offense, he has 21 catches for 256 yards and four touchdowns and 21 rushing yards on eight carries. He also has two punt returns and is averaging 81.25 all-purpose yards per game. On defense, Hogan has 13 tackles, one for a loss and two interceptions.Â
