Calvin Men's Soccer Celebrates Senior Night With Shutout Of Alma

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin men's soccer team celebrated Calvin Senior Night with a 3-0 conference victory over Alma College Saturday night at Calvin Soccer Stadium.

The Knights improve to 10-5-2 overall and 3-1-2 in the MIAA. Calvin is 8-0-1 at home this season.

Calvin received a first half goal from freshman Xtreme Hauk (Lansing, Mich/East Lansing HS) and then picked up second half tallies from sophomore Quinten Latchett (Houston, Tx./Bellaire HS) and senior Alex White (Lake Bluff, Il./Lake Forest Academy) to seal the win.
The first half goal by Hauk came in the 27th minute and began with a corner kick by White. The corner ricocheted outside the 18-yard box and was sent back in by senior Jacob Goodling (Charlotte, NC/Covenant Day School). Goodling's ball came to the feet of sophomore Carson Browning (Dublin, Oh./Dublin Jerome HS) who slid a touch to Hauk who slipped a shot past the keeper and into the net for his fourth goal of the year.

In the second half, Latchett was able to get loose on a breakaway against the run of play. Bursting past a defender at midfield, Latchett slashed a low hard shot past the Alma keeper in the 69th minute to create a two-goal advantage.

In the 82nd minute, White came crashing through the left side of the Alma box on a lead pass from Hauk. With the Alma goalkeeper charging hard, White lifted a shot over his outstretched arms to close out the scoring. The goal was White's team-leading 12th goal of the year.n

Calvin finished with a 23-10 shots at goal advantage.

Senior Kaelen Matascastillo (New Kensington, Pa./Minnesota Virtual Academy) went the first half in goal for Calvin, recording one two saves. Senior Zac Moore (Pilesgrove, NJ//Woodstown HS) went the second half in goal for the Knights and had one save.

At halftime, Calvin honored the nine members of its seniors class: Nick Augustyn (Westmont, Il./Benet Academy), Ethan Brown (Muskegon, Mich./Mona Shores HS), Zach Flowerday (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS), Goodling, Matascastillo, Moore, Sammy Postelwait (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS), Reed VanderLugt (Ada, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and White.

COACHES COMMENT: "Always good to get 3 points in the league," said Calvin head men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "Happy to get a shutout and create some chances. One to go and plenty to play for. We'll have to learn from this one quickly before working to get a result out at a significantly improved Adrian side next week."

NEXT UP: Calvin will close out its MIAA regular season campaign next Tuesday, traveling to Adrian for a 7 p.m. contest.
