GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The 18th-ranked Calvin University women's soccer team toppled the Hornets from Kalamazoo College 6-1 on Tuesday at the Calvin Soccer Stadium to remain unbeaten in MIAA play.
With the win, Calvin (11-2-2, 7-0-0 MIAA) earned at least a share of its fifth consecutive MIAA regular season championship and the top seed in the MIAA Postseason Tournament.
The Knights were in control from start to finish, dominating possession on the way to outshooting Kalamazoo (5-11-0, 2-5-0 MIAA) 30-9 overall and 14-5 in shots on goal.
Calvin nearly scored in the opening minute on a great chance inside the box from
Sophie Mueller (North Muskegon, Mich./North Muskegon), and then opened the scoring just minutes later on a header from
Lucy Iverson (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) off a corner kick from
Liz Williams (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) in the fourth minute.
Mikaela Waroway (Ann Arbor, Mich./Father Gabriel Richard) added the next goal in the 12th minute after a blocked shot, while Mueller pushed the lead to 3-0 off a crossing pass from
Cecilia McCarthy (Ypsilanti, Mich./Father Gabriel Richard) in the 28th minute.
Four minutes later,
Olivia Rawls (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) cleaned up a rebound in front of the net off a Waroway shot to give the Knights a four-goal lead.
Mia Judd (Grand Ledge, Mich./Lansing Christian) closed the first half scoring with a penalty kick in the 34th minute to send the Knights into halftime with a 5-0 advantage.
Williams closed the scoring in the 49th minute with a long shot from outside the box for her fourth of the season to open the second half.
The Hornets were able to get on the board in the 81st minute, as Ruby Hogan found a ball that deflected off several Calvin players right in front of the goal to cut the margin to 6-1 before the Knights closed out the final nine minutes to secure the win.
Judd's goal was her team-leading eighth of the season, while Rawls and Mueller scored their seventh and sixth, respectively. Iverson's goal was her fourth, and Waroway netted her third. Williams, Waroway and McCarthy each picked up one assist for the Knights in the win.
Kalex Dodge (Leslie, Mich./Leslie) and
Jorja Jenema (Williamsburg, Mich./Elk Rapids) combined to stop four of the five Kalamazoo shots on goal.
COACH'S COMMENT: "It was another full team effort from our group tonight," Calvin head women's soccer coach
Emily Ottenhoff said. "I liked that we were able to score early to start tipping the game in our favor. We're excited to clinch the top seed for the MIAA tournament, but still have some work to try to win the title outright and we'll spend the next week focusing on that."
NEXT UP: Calvin women's soccer will return to action on Wednesday, October 30, when they close the regular season at Adrian College with a game starting at 7:00 PM.
