Calvin Women's Soccer Betters Albion At Home

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Today the 19th-ranked Calvin women's soccer team welcomed the Brits of Albion to Zuidema Field for an MIAA match up.

The Knights got their first opportunity when Liz Williams (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) collected the ball just past midfield before playing a beautiful through ball past the Brits defense to Elie Farrell (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South). Farrell carried the ball forward and took a shot right at the Albion goalkeeper who blocked it with her foot. Unfortunately for the Brits, the ball ricocheted back to Farrell who wouldn't waste a second chance as she sent a low shot into the bottom left corner to give Calvin the 1-0 lead.

In the twenty-ninth minute the Knights were on the attack again when Cecelia McCarthy (Ypsilanti, Mich./Father Gabriel Richard) got the ball inside the eighteen-yard box. With Albion defenders closing in she laid the ball off to Mia Judd (Grand Ledge, Mich./Lansing Christian) who calmly slotted the ball past the diving goalkeeper to extend the Calvin lead.

With three minutes left in the half Bri Wade (Norton Shores, Mich./Mona Shores) got the ball on the endline and sent a low cross into the six-yard box. A Brit defender attempted to clear it but instead sent the ball into her own net for an own goal.

As the second half got underway the Knights kept their foot on the gas when Sophie Mueller (North Muskegon, Mich./North Muskegon) dribbled the ball into enemy territory with an Albion defender on her back. She took the shot and despite the Brits goalkeepers getting the save sophomore Mikaela Waroway (Ann Arbor, Mich./Father Gabriel Richard) was there to finish the job with an easy tap in to make the score 4-0.

Just a few minutes later, Farrell stepped up to take a corner kick and found junior Lucy Iverson (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) who headed it into the back of the net for the Knights. With two minutes left in the match Calvin put the final nail in the coffin when sophomore Avery Mrozinski (Milford, Mich./Milford) scored her first goal of the season as the Knights picked up the 6-0 victory.

Calvin outshot the Brits 32-6 and goalkeeper Kalex Dodge (Leslie, Mich./Leslie) recorded one save as the Knights moved to a 10-2-2 overall record and 6-0 in MIAA play.

COACHES COMMENT: "Great to get another result today," said head coach Emily Ottenhoff. "We started a bit slow in the first half but I was pleased with the way we moved the ball in the second half. I thought we had a number of people who snubbed in and changed the game for us."

UP NEXT: The Knights will be back in action on Tuesday, October 22nd when they welcome Kalamazoo to Calvin Stadium for a 7 PM matchup.
