Calvin Men's Soccer Secures Shutout Win Over No. 13 Ohio Northern

ADA, Oh. – In a meeting of nationally-ranked teams, Calvin secured a 1-0 win over host Ohio Northern Friday night at the ONU Invitational. Calvin entered the match ranked 19th while Ohio Northern came in ranked 13th.

The Knights improve to 4-0-0 on the season with the win which marks Calvin's second of the year over a nationally-ranked opponent with Calvin defeating No. 24 Ohio Wesleyan on September 2.

Senior Colin Iverson (Naperville, Il./Naperville North HS) scored the only goal of the game, booting in a loose ball off a free kick into the box that was initially saved by Ohio Northern goalkeeper Lucas Hickey. Iverson was able to pounce on the rebound in the box and slam a shot into the net with senior Oliver Akintade (Lake Forest, Il./Lake Forest HS) drawing an assist on the play. The goal came in the 54th minute of play.

Ohio Northern (2-1-0) pressed for the equalizer as time ticked down but the Calvin back line was able to clear the ball out of danger in consistent fashion and particularly strong in clearing the box off of Polar Bear free kicks.

Ohio Northern outshot Calvin 7-4 but Calvin senior goalkeeper Daniel Wunder (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was able to pick up one save in securing his third consecutive shutout victory of the year.

COACHES COMMENT: "That was a really big 3 points on the road for us tonight," said Calvin head men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "Ohio Northern is a fantastic team and will definitely be playing in November. Our guys found a way to meet the challenge. A really gritty goal and a fantastic job defending, especially in nervy moments. We'll have to rest up quickly and prep for another OAC side in Wilmington tomorrow."

NEXT UP: Calvin will face Wilmington College (Oh.) at 5 p.m. on day two of the ONU Invitational.
