GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Tonight, Calvin welcomed the Pioneers of Carroll University for a non-conference matchup. After an explosive first half the Knights went on to win 3-0 while improving their overall record to 2-0-0.
The 19th ranked Knights struck first when they were awarded a corner kick ten minutes into the first half. Liz Williams (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) sent in a high, swinging ball that bounced off the post and was deflected directly toward the head of sophomore Lucy Iverson (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) who sent it into the back of the net.
Later in the half, Knights had numbers forward as they continued to test the Pioneers defense. In the 29th minute, fifth year senior Anna Reimink (Winona Lake, Ind./Lakeland Christian) gathered the ball deep in Carroll territory. With two defenders on her back she passed the ball to the top of the eighteen yard box to the waiting feet of Emma Shaffer (Chicago, Ill./Loyola Academy) who sent the ball high into the top left corner to extend the Calvin lead.
With just five minutes left in the first half the Knights lined up for another corner kick. Elie Farrell (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) sent in a ball to Mia Judd (Grand Ledge, Mich./Lansing Christian) who rose above the crowd of players to head the ball in for another Calvin goal.
In the second half, the Knights bunkered in on defense and shut down every opportunity the Pioneers tried to create. By the time the final whistle blew the Knights out shot Carroll 27-5 while junior goalkeeper Kalex Dodge (Leslie, Mich./Leslie) recorded her first clean sheet of the season.
"Happy to get a result tonight against a gritty Carroll team," said Calvin women's soccer head coach Emily Ottenhoff. "It wasn't our sharpest performance of the young season but we found a way. We have some work to do before we play this weekend in New Jersey against two quality opponents in Stevens and Widener."
UP NEXT: The Knights will travel to Hoboken, New Jersey this weekend to compete in the Engineering Cup where they will take on Stevens on Friday at 8 p.m. and Widener on Saturday at 7 p.m.
