Late Comeback Goal Earns Calvin Women's Soccer 1-1 Draw

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Tonight the Calvin women's soccer team played in the first of their two matches in Hoboken, New Jersey as they took on Stevens Institute of Technology.

After a short weather delay the 19th ranked Knights were back on their heels early as Stevens struck first with a goal in the 11th minute. Despite the setback, Calvin found their footing and put pressure on the Stevens defense. In the final second of the half the ball found a streaking Katherine Bergman (North Farmington, Mich./Farmington), wide open on the left flank. As the final seconds ticked down Bergman crossed the ball into the six yard box where a leaping Anna Reimink (Winona Lake, Ind./Lakeland Christian Academy) was able to deflect the ball past the goalkeeper. However, the referee determined that time had expired before the goal so the Knights headed into halftime down 1-0.

As the second half got underway both teams struggled to break through the opposing defense. With just under five minutes left in the game Mia Brown (Norton Shores, Mich./Mona Shores) gathered the ball in Calvin territory. After looking up and surveying the field she sent a lofting long ball into SIT's eighteen to the feet of Sophie Mueller (North Muskegon, Mich./North Muskegon) who slipped the ball into the bottom left corner to bring the Knights even at 1-1.

The final minutes of the game ticked down until the whistle blew and the game officially ended in a tie moving Calvin's overall record to 2-0-1. However, in order to determine tournament standings, the teams entered a penalty shootout where the Knights fell 3-2. Both teams tallied up 12 shots during the match while junior goalkeeper Kalex Dodge (Leslie, Mich./Leslie) recorded three saves for Calvin.

COACHES COMMENT: "Stevens is a really good team and had us on our heels for a good portion of the match," said Calvin women's soccer head coach Emily Ottenhoff. "We found moments to settle in and create some dangerous opportunities. Really pleased with our resilience to find a goal late."

UP NEXT: The Knights will remain in Hoboken, New Jersey as they take on Widener tomorrow night at 7pm.
