GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's soccer team traveled to Alma to take on the Scots in its second MIAA matchup of the season. The Knights entered today's match with a 1-0 conference record and a 7-0-2 overall record.Â
Calvin didn't wait long to apply the pressure as Maggie Smith (Flint, Mich./Flint Powers Catholic) dispossessed a Scot defender deep in Alma territory. She took a few touches up the left side of the field before sending the ball into the middle of the eighteen where Elie Farrell (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South) was able to send it past the diving Scot goalkeeper.
In the 27th minute Anna Reimink (Winona Lake, Ind./Lakeland Christian Academy) gathered the ball in the Knights end of the field. She took a touch before expertly slotting it in between two defenders to the feet of a streaking Farrell. Farrell carried the ball into the eighteen yard box before burying it into the bottom right hand corner or the goal to give Calvin a 2-0 lead at the half.
As the second half got underway the Knights kept their momentum rolling when Carley Curry (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) sent a looping ball into the box in the 48th minute. After pin balling off several players Farrell got her head on it and sent it into the back of the net to complete her hat trick and give Calvin a 3-0 lead.
However, the Knights weren't done yet and neither was Farrell. In the 56th minute Farrell once again found the ball at her feet in front of the Alma net and she calming finished the play for her fourth goal of the day.
Katherine Bergman (North Farmington, Mich./Farmington) got in on the scoring action in the 64th when she picked up a goal of her own. In the 85th minute Bergman sent a through ball to Bri Wade (Norton Shores, Mich./Mona Shores) just as she broke away from the Alma defenders. Wade took a few touches before sending it into the bottom right hand corner to wrap up the Knights scoring and give Calvin the 6-0 win.
The Calvin defense held strong throughout the entire match as they held them to only four shots and not allowing any shots on goal.
In scoring four goals, Farrell became the first Calvin women's soccer player since Tricia Dyk achieved the feat twice in 1999, to score four goals in a single game.
COACHES COMMENTS: "Happy to get a road result today," said head coach Emily Ottenhoff. "The first half we weren't quite as sharp as we'd like to be from the start but we were happy with how our group responded in the second half to finish out the match. Looking forward to a day off and then getting back to work on Monday."
UP NEXT: The Knights will be back in action on Wednesday, October 7th, when they travel to South Bend, Indiana to take on Saint Mary's.
