Calvin Women's Volleyball Tops Pioneers in Three

GRAND RAPIDS - The fourth-ranked Calvin University volleyball team won its final match of the 2023 Calvin Invite 3-0 against UW-Platteville by the scores of 25-20, 25-13 and 25-20 on Saturdy at Van Noord Arena.

Calvin (11-2) was in control from the start, building an 18-12 lead in the opening set on the way to a 25-20 win and a 1-0 lead in the match.

After hitting .139 in the opening set, the Knights jumped up to .292 in the second set to win that going away 25-13 to take a commanding 2-0 overall lead.

The attack efficiency continued to rise from there, as Calvin hit .429 in the third set to close out UW-Platteville (12-3) in three games.

Aerin Baker (Saugatuck, Mich./Saugatuck) finished a strong tournament with a .500 attack efficiency and a match-high 13 digs to go with four blocks and eight digs.

Vanessa Martinez (Hudsonville, Mich./Wyoming) continued her strong play on offense and defense with six kills and five blocks, while Avery Ekkens (Portage, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian) and Gabriella Kellogg (Belleville, Mich./Plymouth Christian Academy) each chipped in six kills.

Aubrey Wrubel (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) led the Knights with nine digs and was named to the All-Tournament Team after moving into fourth place in program history with 1,748 career digs.

COACH'S COMMENT: "After you lose a match, sometimes people don't realize that you have to come back with a lot of confidence and courage," Calvin head women's volleyball coach Dr. Amber Warners said. "This team is still learning that. I thought we played steady today. We're trying to get them to play relaxed, loose and having fun, and we still have to work on that. But overall, serving and passing is where it's at and I thought we did those things really well today."

NEXT UP: Calvin women's volleyball will return to action on Wednesday, September 27, when it hosts University of Chicago in a non-conference match scheduled to start at 7:00 PM.
