Calvin Women's Volleyball Takes Down Maroons in Four

GRAND RAPIDS - The seventh-ranked Calvin University women's volleyball team overcame a second-set set back to defeat University of Chicago in four by the scores of 25-16, 19-25, 25-16 and 25-15 on Wednesday.

Calvin (12-2) was in control for most of the night and jumped out to a strong start with a 25-16 opening set win thanks to four kills apiece from Aerin Baker (Saugatuck, Mich./Saugatuck) and Avery Ekkens (Portage, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian).

Chicago (5-9) answered in the second set, taking advantage four Calvin serving errors and six attack errors to even up the match at 1-1 with a 25-19 set-two win.

The Knights would wrestle control back from there, as Baker and Vanessa Martinez (Hudsonville, Mich./Wyoming) combined for nine kills in a 25-16 set-three win, and Gabriella Kellogg (Belleville, Mich./Plymouth Christian Academy) helped seal the win with three kills in the fourth set.

Baker finished with a team-best 13 kills, while Martinez hit .571 on the attack with 10 kills to go with five total blocks.

Ekkens led the Knights with 13 digs and two service aces. Aubrey Wrubel added 11 digs and moved into third place in Calvin volleyball program history with 1,759 digs for her career.

COACH'S COMMENT: "When we dominated the serving and passing, that got us the result we wanted," Calvin women's volleyball head coach Dr. Amber Warners said. "In the second set, we just didn't do that. We're still trying to learn how to have a sense of urgency every ingle point. Sometimes we win a game and then we get comfortable. The difference between being comfortable and having an urgency is huge in the way you play."

NEXT UP: Calvin women's volleyball returns to action on Friday, September 29, when it hosts Saint Mary's (Ind.) in the MIAA opener starting at 6:30 PM.
