Calvin Softball Splits In MIAA Matchup Against Adrian

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 GRAND RAPIDS, Mich.- Today the Calvin softball traveled to Adrian to take on the Bulldogs. After dropping the first game of the evening the Knights were able to bounce back and win game two after just five innings.

GAME 1
CALVIN 6, ADRIAN 8

In the first game of the evening Adrian jumped on to the scoreboard first when it was able to push across one run in the bottom of the first inning. In the top of the second inning Calvin looked to response as Grace Glass (Indianapolis, Ind./North Central) got things rolling with a single. This brought up senior Kali Yant (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg) who sent a single to deep center field and allowed Glass to score and ties the score at 1-1.

In the bottom of the second, Adrian got into a groove, finding gaps in the Calvin defense, and scored three runs. In the top of the third Sydney Duong (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian) found her way on base when she forced the Bulldog defense to make an error. Next up was Hannah Biddlecome (Dallas, Tx./Portage Northern) who showed off her speed as she beat out an infield groundball. The Knights were aggressive on the base path as Biddlecome kept the play going by advancing to second base on the throw while Duong found herself on third thanks to a defensive interference call. With two runners in scoring position catcher Taylor Sanborn (Midland, Mich./Midland) doubled to left field to make the score 4-3.

Both teams were quiet until the bottom of the fourth inning when a quick single followed by a double allowed Adrian to extend its lead. In the top of the fifth, Duong led things off for Calvin with a home run to center field, her fifth of the season, to make the score 5-4. Biddlecome followed that up with a walk before putting herself in scoring position by stealing second. Freshman Carly Dole (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant) then brought her home when she sent a shot to right center for a triple. Two batters later Emilie Gist (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) hit an RBI groundout to bring in Dole. This gave Calvin its first lead of the game as the score sat at 6-5.

In the bottom of the fifth inning Adrian was able to get a rally going as some big hits and some defensive errors allowed them to score three runs and reclaim the lead. Unfortunately, the Knights were unable to come alive on offense in the last two innings as they fell to the Bulldogs 8-6.

Senior Kirsten Krause (Fredonia, Wis./Grafton) got the start on the mound for the Knights before she was relieved by freshman Brooke Hunderman (Grand Rapids, Mich./Calvin Christian) in the fifth inning. Krause ended her showing with four strikeouts and seven allowed hits while Hunderman recorded three strikeouts and giving up three hits.

GAME 2
CALVIN 10, ADRIAN 2

In the nightcap Adrian kept its game one momentum rolling as it scored two runs in the top of the first. In the bottom of the first, Calvin fought back as Duong led off with a single up the middle. Biddlecome then forced a walk before Dole laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position. The strategy would pay off on the next play when Sanborn doubled to left field and even the score at 2-2.

Both teams were quiet until the bottom of the third when Biddlecome led off with her third walk of the day. Biddlecome then added to her stolen base total as she took second before Dole forced the Bulldog defense to make an error and gave the Knights baserunners on the corners. Sanborn then sent an RBI ground ball to the shortstop to give the Knights a run and advance Dole to third. On the next play Gist sent a ground ball back up the middle to score Dole to extend the Knights lead. Glass then reached first on an error before Emma Walker (Hamilton, Mich./Saugatuck) singled to left field to bring in Gist. The Knights continued to put pressure on the Adrian defense as pinch hitter Ali Shultz (Wyoming, Mich./Grandville) singled to the shortstop and scored Glass to make the score 6-2. The Knights rounded out their third inning scoring streak when Duong hit her second homerun of the day, a three-run shot to left field, to give Calvin the 9-2 lead.

Calvin capped of their scoring when Gist singled to left field in the bottom of the bottom of fourth inning. She moved her way around the bases before scoring on a wild pitch to extend the Knights lead. Sophomore pitcher Emma Ludema (Martin, Mich./Wayland) and the rest of the Calvin defense then shut down the Adrian offense and walked away with a 10-2 win after just five innings. Ludema recorded three strikeouts while giving up six hits.

UP NEXT: Calvin will be back in action on Monday when they travel to Indiana to take on Anderson for their final non-conference matchup of the season. Game one will begin at 3 p.m. and game two will follow at 5 p.m.
