GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Calvin women's lacrosse team dropped a rivalry showdown with Hope Saturday afternoon at Eagles Stadium, falling 16-9.

Hope moved to 5-0 in league play while Calvin dropped to 3-2 in the league and 7-6 overall. The Knights still have conference road games with Albion and Adrian as they bid for a spot in the upcoming four-team MIAA Tournament.

Calvin took the early momentum with Hope, grabbing a 4-1 first quarter lead behind early goals from seniors Makelah McClymont (Camp Hill, Pa./Covenant Christian Academy) and Megan Gilbert (Lansing, Mich./Holt HS) and freshmen Morgan Bethard (DeWitt, Mich./DeWitt HS) and Jacey Smith (Watertown, Wisc./Watertown HS).

Hope (8-5 overall) scored four straight goals to build a 5-4 second quarter lead before Gilbert stemmed the tide with an unassisted goal to tie the game 5-5 with 5:58 left in the first half. Calvin appeared to take a 6-5 lead two minutes later but a goal was waved off due to a basket depth violation, turning the ball over back the Flying Dutch.

Hope made good use of the possession, scoring 40 seconds later to take a 6-5 lead. McClymont answered for the Knights to tie the game 6-6 but Hope a pair of goals in the final two minutes to lead 8-6 at the break.

The two rivals traded early third quarter goals to make it 9-7 before Hope responded with four unanswered tallies to take a 13-7 lead heading into the final quarter.
Hope made it 15-7 in the fourth before the Knights were able to get back on the board using a nice give-and-go between freshman Audrey Booher (Fishers, Ind./Heritage Christian HS) and Bethard that resulted in Booher's 25th goal of the season.

Gilbert then scored her fourth goal of the game, converting a well-placed feed from freshman Annaliese Hanson (Naperville, Il./Naperville North HS).

Hope added a final goal in the final minute of play to close out the scoring.

Senior Jessica Camp (O'Fallon, Il./O'Fallon Township HS) came up with a career-high 18 saves, finishing one save shy of matching a Calvin single-game record. She also posted a .529 saves percentage. She also picked up seven ground balls.

Gilbert led Calvin in scoring with four goals to go with seven draw controls, three ground balls and two caused turnovers. McClymont had a pair of goals while Booher had a goal and an assist. Bethard finished with a goal and two assists with Smith netting one goal. Senior Liske Lieuwen (Atlanta, Ga./Home School) had an assist and caused four Hope turnovers.

Hope finished with a shots at goal advantage of 40-33.
NEXT UP: Calvin will journey to Albion next Tuesday for a conference game set to begin at 6 p.m.
